Robert Edward Swartz, 67, of Michigan City, passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2026, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Robert was born on August 24, 1958, in
Mishawaka, Indiana. He lived a life defined not by attention or accolades, but by consistency, kindness, and quiet strength.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Swartz; his sons, Bobby and Zachary; his daughter-in-law, Johanna; and his three beloved grandchildren, who were the center of his world. Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff.
Robert was a hard worker in the truest sense of the word-creative, capable, and endlessly resourceful. If something was broken, he fixed it. If something was needed, he found a way to provide it. He had a gift for making things work, whether that meant repairing what others had given up on, finding the exact tool tucked away in one of his carefully kept "mystery boxes," or quietly stepping in to help without being asked.
He loved animals, loved teaching, and loved his family deeply. One of the stories his family loves is of the day Robert stopped to help a family of abandoned ducklings on the side of the road. He brought them home, set up a small kiddie pool inside the house, and raised them by hand until they were strong enough to live on their own. It was simply who he was-if something vulnerable needed care, he took responsibility for it.
At any family gathering, Robert could be found holding a baby, encouraging his grandchildren, or offering steady guidance through action rather than words. He showed his grandsons what strength looks like-not loud or forceful, but patient, capable, and generous. He modeled perseverance, creativity, and a strong work ethic simply by how he lived.
Throughout his illness, Robert carried himself with remarkable grace and humility. He rarely complained, remained thoughtful of others even in his hardest moments, and faced each day with quiet courage. His strength was never performative; it was lived.
Robert gave more than he ever took and asked for little in return. His presence was steady, his love constant, and his impact lasting. He will be profoundly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
In accordance with Robert's wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life will be held for family and close friends at a later date.
His remains will be held at Fairview Mausoleum, Mishawaka.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Robert by doing one good deed for someone without recognition, as he was known to always do.
