Robert "Bob" Terry 85yo. Born Chicago IL 1940, Died San Francisco CA 2025.
Robert was born to first generation Lithuanian ( John "Jack" Terry) and Italian (Lucille Bonolo) Americans in Illinois in 1940. His father Jack received 3 purple hearts while soldiering against fascism in the European theatre while Lucille provided for Robert and his sister Penny by renting out rooms to boarders, a work life dynamic that informed his childhood and life.
He graduated from Lindblom Technical High School in 1958 at in the top quartiles of his class. He applied to the United States Navy academy in Annapolis but was
caught having memorized the eye chart and disqualified.
He declined West Point (for which he qualified) on grounds of too much dirt.
He attended Medical School the University of Illinois Chicago where he met the nursing student he eventually wedded, Cathy.
He was drafted into the Army but elected to join the Navy instead. He was deployed to Treasure Island and served on the USS General Leroy Eltinge a merchant marine ship based out of Treasure Island as the ship's medical doctor. After mustering out of the Navy with an honorable discharge Robert and Cathy spent The Summer Of Love (1967) in San Francisco where they had an apartment on Paige Street within one block of the intersection of Haight & Ashbury. There they met many lifelong friends and made a life in California.
Robert took a job with Kaiser Permanente doing General Medicine in Antioch proudly serving the working class and farmers of the area. He kept that job through his retirement from Medicine in 2000 at age 60. Robert and Cathy had 3 children, Carey, Chris and Dana, and moved to Lafayette where he fell in love with the hills and running.
In the last decade of his life he greeted ultimately 8 grandchildren including Alexa, William, Edward, Jack and 4 others. He will be laid to rest in the town where he raised his family, at the base of the Briones hills in which he loved to wander, not lost, not forgotten.
Visitation for Robert will be Thursday, November 13, 10am - 12pm with a Mass at 12pm, and burial to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Funeral Center 1965 Reliez Valley Rd Lafayette, CA 94549
