Robert Earl "Bobby" Thompson Sr.

1939 - 2026

Augusta, GA – Robert "Bobby" Earl Thompson, Sr., 86, the loving and faithful husband of 60 years to the late Shirley Ann Thompson was received into eternal rest by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Robert was born in Augusta, GA on July 14, 1939 to the late Malcolm and Jennie Thompson.

He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church for over 60 years. Throughout his time there he served quietly behind the scenes, maintaining many aspects of the church. He was a devoted member of the men's Sunday school class. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. His military service also included being a member of the Honor Guard, which presided over veteran funerals in National Cemeteries. A machinist by trade, he spent his career employed by Dupont/Bechtel at the Savannah River Plant.

Robert was deeply devoted to his family. His grandchildren were the joy of his life, whom he spent as much time with as possible. Additional hobbies included photography, Civil War and WWII history, and enjoying an ice-cold Coca-Cola. At church he was known as the "chewing gum" man: always ready with Wrigley's Double Mint gum. He was prepared for any situation and if you needed a tool, he had it. More importantly, he was always willing to help others in a time of need.

The Family members include his sons: Robert "Robby" Thompson, Jr. (Sherry) and Ricky Thompson (Wanda); grandchildren: Tanner Thompson (Katie), Robert "Ret" Thompson III (Glorianne), Courtney Thompson, Haley Buck (Cody), Will Thompson, Summer Thompson, and Sadie Thompson; sister: Carol Weathers; brothers: Mac Thompson (Helen), Billy Thompson, Joe Thompson, and Danny Thompson (Cherie). He was preceded in death by his sister June Rupert.

The funeral service will be held Friday, February 6, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Kyle Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tanner Thompson, Ret Thompson, Will Thompson, Cody Buck, Roy Thompson, and Timmy Rupert.
