Robert Wagner Obituary

Published by Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home on Jun. 5, 2012.
Niantic-Robert Lindbergh Wagner was born on October 5, 1927 in Wilmington, Delaware to his parents, Charles and Bessie (Richardson) Wagner. He died this past Tuesday on June 5, 2012 at 84 years of age. A man of passionate intellectual pursuit, Bob graduated from the University of Delaware with a master's degree in Political Science and enjoyed post graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. Curious about life in New York, Bob relocated to Manhattan and began his lifelong career as a social studies teacher for students at Great Neck North High School. While teaching, Bob discovered his bride, Sarah (Sue) Jane Smith, a spry and beloved English teacher. Together, they dedicated their lives to education and the simple yet extraordinary pleasures of family with their four children in Sea Cliff, Long Island. Robert is pre-deceased by his oldest son, Robert Lindbergh Wagner, Jr. and his wife, Sue and is survived by his three children and their spouses: Sarah (Wagner) and Tom Bonura, James Wagner and Bess (Bertrand) Wagner, and Matthew Wagner and Christine (Doll) Wagner. For the past 9 years, Bob cherished the gifts of his nine beautiful grandchildren: Peyton, Carter, and Sarah Brooke Bonura, Hagan, Connor and Emma Wagner, and Kurt, Luc and Chloe Wagner. Robert enjoyed his final years in the warm home of his loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Tom. He was a man of great charity and perseverance. "Grandpa Bob" will continue to be loved and an inspiration to those who were fortunate to truly know him. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 11th at 11am at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.neilanfuneralhome.com
