Robert DeWayne Winchel, 79, of Wellsville, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on April 9, 1946, in Peculiar, Missouri, to Ernest and Marguerite Winchel, Robert was a man of strong character, deep values, and unwavering devotion to family and community. On February 18, 1967, he married the love of his life, Brenda Hiatt. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, hard work, and love for those around them.
Robert worked at Ford Motor Company from 1967 until his retirement in 1998 and was a proud member of UAW Local 249. Never one to be idle, he also farmed, ran a trenching business, and later owned and operated a car wash. In retirement, he continued to stay active by raising game birds on his farm, Rock Creek Bird Farm—an endeavor that brought him great satisfaction.
He was a dedicated member of the Grand River Masonic Lodge #276 and a passionate outdoorsman who found joy in hunting, fishing, and time spent in nature. Above all, Robert treasured his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a faithful supporter at countless school and sporting events for his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandson.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda; his sons, Brian Winchel and Todd Winchel; and his daughter-in-law, Tracy Winchel. He leaves behind four adored grandchildren—Briley Winchel and Kayla Winchel (children of Brian), and Faith Winchel and Xander Winchel (children of Todd and Tracy)—as well as his cherished great-grandson, Rence Winchel, son of Faith.
He is also survived by his brother, Donald Winchel (Patty); his sister, Retha Cohee (Mike); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Marguerite; his brothers, Harold and Raymond; and his sister, Darlene.
Robert will be remembered for his steady presence, generous heart, and enduring love for his family. His legacy of integrity, hard work, and devotion will live on in all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rock Creek Schoolhouse in Robert’s memory.
