Roberta METZMAN Obituary

Published by Campbell River Courier Islander on Mar. 9, 2012.

August 24th, 1939 - February 11th, 2012

It is with sadness that Bobbie's family announces her passing February 11th. Left to mourn are her husband of 53 years, Robert, their sons Dr. Louis Metzman (Kathleen), Dr. Michael Metzman (Antoinette) and David Metzman, LLB (Joelle) together with 11 beloved grandchildren.

Bobbie lived a remarkable life full of love and accomplishments. She met the love of her life while in high school in Philadelphia when she was spotted by Bob in their junior year. Sixty some years later, he still vividly can see her in the red sweater and blue straight skirt standing at the front of the class and surveying her surroundings. He was taken by her beauty and then smitten with her academic prowess. After finishing high school they both went to college - Bobbie, on a full scholarship to study mathematics and Robert to study electrical engineering. Married in 1959 while still in college, Louis was born in 1965, followed by Michael in 1967 and finally David another 2 years later. It was shortly after David was born that with the support of Bobbie, Robert returned to medical school. This was a struggle with Bobbie teaching part time and being a fulltime mother but it was also a very happy time as they built their life together.

After Bob finished his medical internship the family moved to Florida and once the boys were old enough Bobbie returned to teaching and finished her career at Florida International University. She loved working with students imparting her love of learning and academics. She was a great teacher.

But Bobbie's greatest accomplishment was her 3 boys - they were loved with a passion of a Jewish mother. With a mother who taught college mathematics and a father with a degree in electrical engineering and a medical degree, it was a foregone conclusion that her boys were going to college. And so they did. Louis followed his father into medicine specializing in Orthopedics. Michael also followed that path specializing in Dermatology. Younger brother David decided that 3 physicians in the family were enough and graduated from Oxford University with a degree in law and now specializes in financial structures.

The love of family of course flowed through to Bobbie's 11 grandchildren each of whom she was immensely proud of - she shared their disappointments and exalted in their successes. They have lost their Bubbi, and their strongest supporter.

It was their shared love of fishing that brought Bob, and Bobbie to Campbell River 22 years ago. First they came for a few weeks at a time but it was not long before they started to look for a place they could spend more time at. They were just starting to look when they were shown a home at 539 S. Island Highway. They bought it the same day. Since that time they have spent 6 months a year here. Every year their friends waited patiently for spring to come and were always grateful the day Bobbie arrived. Bobbie was a gracious host sharing Bob's catch of the day and the fresh seafood prepared with her love of cooking was always a treat.

Her friendship and love will be celebrated by her Campbell River friends in April at her usual arrival time. However sadly this time Bobbie will not be coming and she will be greatly missed.
