Following his naval service, he was employed as a Field Service Representative for Fife Corporation of Oklahoma. He serviced the eastern US, repairing industrial measuring devices, while living in Connecticut.
In 1984, he and his family moved to Pleasantville, Pennsylvania where his entrepreneurial mindset helped him to start his own company, Sensor Services, where he invented specialized equipment needed to measure precise thicknesses of products in the manufacturing industry. Rod was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with his buddies. He loved spending time outdoors, enjoyed canoeing & taking daily rides in his side by side. He had a brilliant mind & had an incredible ability to fix & build anything he put his mind to. He had a way with animals and loved his many pets over the years. He had a unique sense of humor, often making up songs about those he loved & his surroundings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin L. Lake, his in-laws Lawrence (Smitty) & Charlotte Worden Smith Shouey (Jack), & an infant brother, James Rodney Lake.
