Rodney Owens Obituary
Published by Legacy on Nov. 25, 2025.
Rodney Owens, 82, was born in a small farmhouse in Jethro, Arkansas. From a young age, growing up amidst the beauty of the Ozark Mountains, he developed a love for hunting, fishing, and baseball-activities that shaped his spirited childhood and lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.
At 17, Rodney answered the call of duty and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving his country with honor and bravery, most notably during wartime in Vietnam. His military career took him around the world, part of the time with the IG Team, providing him with unforgettable experiences and a strong sense of purpose. Rodney retired from the Air Force in 1980 at 37, but his dedication continued as he served another 18 years as a Civil Servant at Whiteman Air Force Base.
In 1968, Rodney met and married Paulette, beginning a partnership that lasted 57 years. With this union, Rodney welcomed a daughter, Shonda, and together, he and Paulette grew their family, adding Tonyea and Ty to their hearts and home. Settling in Knob Noster, Missouri, Rodney's life centered around family and the community surrounding Whiteman Air Force Base. Blessed with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, he was a cherished G-Pa.
After his second retirement at 55, Rodney embarked on his dream job - working with his son, Ty, as he built beautiful custom homes in the Warrensburg area. Working alongside his son and grandson, Taylor, brought Rodney great joy, reflecting his deep love for family and pride in their accomplishments. Rodney found happiness in time spent with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his time on the golf course, fishing, and cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs, never wavering in his loyalty. He was also fond of the Dallas Cowboys, but his family loved him anyway.
Rodney's faith was important to him, and as a member of Northside Christian Church in Warrensburg, he was baptized there in 1998.
Rodney wore many hats throughout his life: son, brother, cousin, uncle, husband, dad, G-Pa, and friend. His humor, generosity, kindness, and genuine care for others left a bright mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Rodney believed in treating people with dignity and always looked for the good in those around him. He was truly loved and will be deeply missed.
Rodney passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on November 21, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ouita & Harlan Childers, his sister, Darla Crider, his brother, Bill Childers, his son, Ty Owens, and his great-grandson, Ty Owens. He is now reunited with them in heaven. He is survived by his wife, Paulette Owens; daughters, Shonda Hackler and Tonyea Inglis (Kenny); grandchildren, Shonice Scruggs, Taylor Owens (Brooke), Haley Owens, Lane Inglis, Sean Hayes, and Brianna Inglis; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Terry and David Childers; sister, Judy Wilkins; and numerous other family members and friends.
A celebration of Rodney's life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the City Union Mission.
Rodney's spirit and light will be carried forward by all who loved him.
