Rodney Joseph Schafer, 75, of Suitland, Maryland, passed peacefully at home with his family by his side, Friday, June 14, 2024. Rodney was born December 16, 1948, to the late Evelyn and Joseph Schafer in Washington, D.C. Rodney was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, who bravely served our country with over 20 years of distinguished military service in the aircraft maintenance field. Duty stations included: Delaware, Germany, Arkansas, and Utah. He was widowed after more than 45 years of marriage to the love of his life, Jackie. It was a love that blossomed in their early years, grew even stronger through the years, and will last an eternity. After years of traveling together around the world, they would return to the area where they met and fell in love. They purchased their first home where they raised their family and spent the remainder of their lives together. They enjoyed spending time together traveling, fixing up their home and yard, and going to casinos and restaurants. One of his favorite places to visit, was definitely Gettysburg, PA, where he had a strong desire to visit “his boys”, and learn more about the civil war and the history of our country. A trip to Gettysburg’s would never be complete without lunch at “General Pickett’s Buffet”. Another passion of his was also taking care of his cars, home/yard, and his beloved dogs. His cars were always immaculate, yards well-manicured, and dogs always cherished and spoiled. He was also a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved them all and was affectionally known as ‘Pops”. He was always there to teach them new skills, starting with riding the tractor at an early age, using tools, and learning how to fix anything and everything. Most of all he was always there for his family. He will always be loved and remembered by many. Rodney is predeceased by his wife, Jackie Schafer, his grandson Keith Poe, and his great grandson Jaxson. Rodney is survived by his daughter Lisa Poe (Shawn), granddaughter Sarah Poe, grandson Jack Poe (Paloma), great grandchildren Alexander and Isabella, his sister Michelle Ingram (William), nieces Anna and Emily Ingram, nephews Michael Ingram and John Velez, and his beloved dogs Annie and Marlo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MDA: Muscular Dystrophy Association and/ or Fisher House at JBA: Home - Joint Base Andrews Fisher House
