Roger Barr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home on Dec. 12, 2025.
Roger Dale Barr

Of Afton

Roger Dale Barr passed away on Friday December 12, 2025 at the age of 85. He was born August 29, 1940 to Elizabeth Harder Barr and Richard Burgess Barr in Afton, NY. Roger was the third of four brothers. Richard and George predeceased Roger. The youngest brother, Robert, survives.

Roger grew up in Afton and graduated from Afton Central School and later attended Broome Community College. He was a stellar athlete and played basketball, football and baseball while in high school. After graduating he played softball and basketball, fished, bowled and golfed.

On June 1, 1963 he married Barbara Jean Schell. They were married 62 years and had two children, Cindy and David. They took frequent family camping trips to the Adirondacks, Catskills and Maine and after their kids were grown took camping trips to Alaska, Montana and Texas among others. For several years they wintered in Lake Josephine, Florida, and had a summer camp at Twin Islands Campground in Roscoe, NY.

Roger was an avid fisherman and a founding member of the Oneonta Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Some of his favorite times were fishing trips to Montana and Labrador. He also made frequent trips to Roscoe to fish the Delaware and Beaverkill Rivers.

Roger worked many jobs over the years and owned two businesses. His first job was at the Afton Enterprise sweeping up the lead type after the paper was printed. For several years he and his friend Nick Johnson had a blown-in insulation company in the Afton area. He worked for many years as a draftsman at Scintilla/Bendix/Amphenol in Sidney where he worked on designs for everything from the Apollo missions through the space shuttle and the international space station. Later he worked in purchasing for Amphenol and the Savin Corporation. After being layed off from Amphenol in his sixties he started Chenango Chem-Dry, a franchised cleaning service.

Roger is survived by his wife Barbara, his daughter Cindy and her husband Greg, his son David and his wife Jennipher, grandson Alex Tiley and his wife Stefanie, granddaughter Katherine Tiley and her significant other John, grandson Trey Mills and his wife Andrea, granddaughter Paige, and great-grandchildren Bryanna, Aiden and Jackson. Roger is also survived by his brother Robert and Robert's wife Bonnie, nephew Michael and his significant other Robin and family, niece Kimberlee and family; sister-in-law Grace Barr, nephew Tim Barr and his wife and his family, niece Terry MacArthur and her family, and niece Tracy and her husband Daniel Phillips and their family.

The family asks that any memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the Oneonta Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

The family will hold calling hours on Friday, December 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home 69-71 Maple Street in Harpursville with a short service to follow at 4 p.m. Online condolences may be made at: www.omaddenfh.com.
