Roger Allan Brinkerhoff
July 23, 1955 – July 31, 2014
On July 31, 2014, after 59 remarkable years, Roger Allan Brinkerhoff passed away surrounded by his family at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital.
Roger was born in Provo, Utah on July 23, 1955 to Teddy and Lenore Brinkerhoff. He had fond memories of growing up in the Edgemont area. He graduated from Orem High School in 1973, and served an LDS Mission in Rapid City, South Dakota. He married his high school sweetheart, Alyce Olsen, in the Provo LDS Temple. They are the proud parents of 5 children and 9 grandchildren.
At a young age Roger developed a strong work ethic. This quality helped him develop his gifts and abilities to become one of Utah Valley's most respected custom home builders. Roger and Alyce worked side-by-side in Brinkerhoff Custom Classics for 35 years, and he freely expressed his appreciation for her many contributions. He dedicated many years in serving in the Utah County and State Home Builder's Associations where he received numerous awards and recognition. However, nothing was more important to Roger than the relationships he built with his clients and fellow contractors. For the past 12 years he's had the privilege of mentoring and working with his oldest son Dustin. He would be pleased to see this legacy continue.
His children will be forever grateful for his powerful example. Roger's greatest lessons were taught by how he lived. His quiet example spoke volumes. In this way he taught his children by how he served and treated others, gave generously of his time and talents, and how he cherished and respected their mother. They felt complete support in everything they did, and recognized him as their most loyal fan. He was, and will remain, his children's greatest role model.
He was a happy and fun-loving grandfather. He adored his grandchildren, and proudly wore the title "Papa Rog." It wasn't unusual for him to instigate a spontaneous activity with them. In their young lives countless treasured memories were made.
Roger loved simple pleasures, and found joy in every day. He loved to be found on a golf course, fishing, hunting with his family, a weekend in Paradise, at dinner with friends, road trips by motorcycle and convertible, countless summers at Lake Powell, in a camping trailer full of grandchildren, and more recently driving his favorite back-roads at sunset in his jeep that he affectionately named "Rogicon." He had a passion and interest in the lives of mountain men, and looked forward to his yearly trips to the Fort Bridger Rendezvous. He had a strong belief in family traditions and hopes to see them continue.
Roger had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and faithfully served in any church assignment he was called to do. He had no fear in sharing his testimony with others. He blessed the lives of many as he served in the wards and stakes of Orem, Mapleton, and BYU. His faith and testimony carried him through his entire life. Most recently he dedicated his time and energy to the 11-year old scouts. He taught these young men with gentleness and patience, and had a special ability to get the very best out of them.
One of his greatest qualities was his optimistic and cheerful disposition in the midst of adversity. He chose to be patient, kind, tolerant, and pleasant in the most difficult situations. In his countless visits to the Huntsman Cancer Hospital over the past few years, his medical team became his dear friends. He never lost his sense of humor, and became a favorite patient. Roger always displayed great hope, courage, and strength throughout his treatments. He felt so blessed to be in their care, and he was grateful to spend his final hours in such a beautiful and inspiring place.
Roger is survived by his wife of 37 years, Alyce, 5 children: Dustin (Emily), Tyson (Brandy), Collin (Danielle), Megan Garrett (Brandon), and Chelsea. His grandchildren: Cody, Ian, Chanel, Crew, Stella, Emery, Miles, Ivy, and Capri.
He also leaves behind his mother Lenore, brother Ron, sisters Lynette Jacob and Janet Mae Brinkerhoff. He is preceded in death by his father Teddy, brother Randy, and nephew Travis.
