Roger Cooksey, a man whose laughter was as infectious as his love for life, has signed off the airwaves for the final time. Born on September 25, 1957, in Dallas, Texas, Roger's journey through life was as vibrant and dynamic as his personality. On March 24, 2025, he took his last bow in McAlester, Oklahoma, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
A family directed celebration of life will be held at Noon, Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Dream City Church, 124 V Hubert Drive, McAlester, Ok.
Roger's life was a beautiful blend of love, laughter, and storytelling. He married the love of his life, Laura Kay Conyer, on a spring day in 1991, in the very town where he would later say his goodbyes. Together, they created a harmonious melody with their family of five children, each note more precious than the last. Roger's legacy continues through his beloved wife, Laura, their children, Robin, Naomi, Nikki and her husband J, Jessica and her husband Sam, and Christina, as well as his treasured grandchildren, Freya, Avery, Anders, Rylan, and Parker.
His brothers, John with his wife Connie, Tony with his wife Kami, and his sister, Lisa with her husband James, along with a chorus of nieces, nephews, and friends, will carry the tune of his memory in their hearts. Roger's life was a testament to the joy of family, the bond of siblings, and the treasure of friendship.
Roger's passion for radio broadcasting was evident from his youth. After graduating from Kiowa High School in 1975, he didn't skip a beat before heading to Dallas to pursue his dream. Over 40 years, Roger's voice graced the airwaves under various monikers, including Commander Cooker, Cooker, and Rockin' Rod. His voice wasn't just heard; it was felt, bringing smiles to countless listeners over the years.
But Roger's talents weren't confined to the studio. He also spent several years as a professional truck driver, where he no doubt entertained his fellow road warriors with his stories and jokes. His love for motorcycles led him on cross-country adventures, and his fishing trips were less about the catch and more about the tales he'd reel in.
Roger had the uncanny ability to captivate any room with his storytelling, ensuring that laughter was the main course at any gathering. He was the life of the party, the center of attention, and he wouldn't have it any other way. His parting words were always "I love you," a testament to his big heart and loving nature.
As we bid farewell to Roger Cooksey, let's remember him not with sadness but with the joy he brought into our lives. Let's honor his memory by living as he did-with a hearty laugh, a generous spirit, and an unwavering love for those around us. Roger, your final sign-off may have come, but your broadcast will forever play in the hearts of your loved ones. Keep the airwaves warm for us, Commander Cooker, until we meet again.
