Roger Gorman, Jr. 90, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio. Born on May 7, 1935, in Morgantown, West Virginia, Roger-known affectionately as "Junior" by his immediate family-lived a life marked by dedication, service, and unwavering love for his family. Roger was the son of Roger and Marie (Hindman) Gorman and grew up in Fairmont, where he graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1953. Eager to see more of the world, he enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly after graduation which included being stationed in Barrow, Alaska, enduring the frigid Arctic and in Arizona at Mt. Lemmon where he settled in Tucson, Arizona after being honorably discharged. Roger served his country with honor and resilience. It was in Tucson that Roger met the love of his life, Frances (Nehring) Gorman. The two married in 1962 and began their family, later relocating to Columbus, Ohio, in 1967, where they would build a home filled with warmth and laughter for the next several decades. Roger and Fran shared 49 years of marriage, a partnership grounded in mutual respect and deep affection. Roger worked as a devoted letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and retired after 30 years. For 20 of those years, he walked 10 miles a day, embodying a work ethic that was both tireless and humble. His commitment to his job was matched only by his devotion to his family. After retiring, Roger and Fran traveled throughout Europe with dear friends, creating cherished memories. With the birth of grandchildren, Roger embraced what he called the best job he ever had-babysitting his grandchildren. He treasured every moment spent with them and made it clear that if his grandkids weren't welcome somewhere, then neither was he. A man of deep faith, Roger was a longtime member of Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church in Columbus. He also found fellowship and purpose through his decades-long involvement with the Masonic Lodge. Having joined while living in Tucson, Roger remained an active member of West Gate Lodge #623 F&AM, Chapter, and Council for over 50 years. His involvement extended to supporting his children's participation in the Order of DeMolay and the International Order of Job's Daughters, where he also served in advisory roles. Roger was a member of Grove City Chapter OES and is a Past Patron. He also found great joy weekly by serving in various roles at the Hoge Memorial Food Bank. Roger found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He bowled for many years in a local USPS league, often bringing one of his children along each week-a special treat that became a beloved tradition. Sitting in the stands with a drink and a bag of chips, watching their dad bowl, remains a treasured memory for his children.
Roger's legacy lives on through his children: son Steven (Alicia), and daughters Suzanne (Scott), Patricia, Janet (Mark), and Mary (Paul); ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special companion, Jeanne Grothaus and his brother, William (Kathy) and sister, Catherine. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Fran, his son-in-law Perry Conrardy, his parents Roger and Marie, and his brothers Donald, Henry, and James.
Roger Gorman will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his generous spirit, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
