Roger Hollis Maggard passed away after a long battle with cancer on January 19, 2024, in Gulfport, MS, at the age of 74. Born on July 25, 1949, in Meridian, MS to Eugene and Opal Maggard. He spent his formative years in Long Beach, MS and attended Harrison Central High School. In 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, Roger was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a Light Weapons Infantryman and machine gunner. His military career, though brief, was distinguished by a series of commendations that spoke volumes about his bravery and dedication. His service was honored with numerous medals, including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and Purple Heart. His most cherished recognition was the Silver Star for gallantry in action, a testament to his extraordinary heroism. Roger's military legacy is that of a hero, whose commitment to his country and fellow soldiers was constant. After his honorable discharge, Roger channeled his energy and talents into the world of business. He was a natural entrepreneur, owning and operating several successful businesses. He was truly a jack of all trades, excelling in every field he touched. He was an avid car enthusiast, taking immense pride in his 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe Sedan, which he often showcased while attending "Cruising the Coast." His commitment to service continued through his involvement with "Take a Soldier Fishing" in Naples, FL, where he shared his love for the outdoors and fishing with fellow veterans. Roger found peace and joy in nature, whether he was camping at Wolf River, grilling, and smoking meats, or simply reveling in the company of friends and family, always ready to share a laugh with his well-known repertoire of jokes. A pillar of his community, Roger served as the President of the Saucier Merchants Association and was a member of the Michael Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport, MS. Above all, he cherished his role as "Papaw" to his grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with his wisdom, humor, and unconditional love. He was also a mentor and a figure of support to many, earning him the affectionate title of Uncle Roger. He was the dad, Papaw, and Uncle Roger he didn't have to be, but he wore these titles with immense pride and joy. He was a man who could achieve anything he set his mind to, and he did so with humility and grace. Roger's memory will be cherished and celebrated by all who knew him, as we bid farewell to a true American hero. He is preceded by his parents, Eugene and Opal (Butler) Maggard; son, Dustan Ladner; and two siblings, Jean Leggett and Kenny Maggard, Sr. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of nearly 46 wonderful years, Gwen Maggard; daughter, Donna Ladner; sister, Marilyn (Lynn) Sekul; six grandchildren, Desiree Ladner, Hollie Ladner, Zachary Ladner, Joshua Ladner, Hannah Ladner, and Juliauna Creppel; three great grandchildren, Jaxton O'Meara, Raelyn Ladner, and ToRae Norbert; along with many extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family asks if you would consider donating to the Naples Take a Soldier Fishing organization. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Maggard family and asks that you keep them in your prayers for the days ahead.
