Roger McNew, a gentle soul and vibrant free spirit, passed away on July 3, 2025, in Friday Harbor, Washington, just days before his 68th birthday. Born on July 6, 1957, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Hayward McNew and Louise Westcott McNew, Roger carved a path uniquely his own - full of music, travel, generosity, and unforgettable stories.
After graduating from high school, Roger embraced a life untethered by convention. He explored the world with boundless curiosity, journeying across continents and sharing his talents wherever he landed. From vibrant cities in Europe to the rugged landscapes of the Middle East, Roger's time living and working on an Israeli kibbutz remains one of many remarkable chapters. One night, amidst unexpected turmoil, he witnessed shelling near the kibbutz - an experience that prompted his return home yet never dimmed his spirit for adventure.
Roger's stories were endless, each one colored by laughter, empathy, and the twinkle in his eye. He made friends in every corner of the globe, and his compassion often led him to put the needs of others before his own. His love of music was as wide as his travels, accompanying him through life's ups and downs with warmth and rhythm.
More than two decades ago, Roger found his true home on San Juan Island. Friday Harbor, with its stunning vistas and welcoming community, became his sanctuary. But for Roger, it was the people who made it paradise. Their embrace of his quirks and quiet wisdom gave him roots - and he gave back tenfold, always present, always kind.
Roger is survived by his brother Terry McNew and sister Brenda Smith, both of Indiana, along with countless friends who will forever remember his stories, his smile, and the gentleness with which he moved through the world.
He will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered. To share memories of Roger, visit www.evanschapel.com/obituary/roger-mcnew
