Law Jones Cremation and Funeral Care - PrestonRoger Earl Nolting, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at the University of Iowa Hospitals.
Roger was a lifelong farmer near Preston, Iowa. Farming wasn’t just his occupation—it was his identity. Roger took great pride in operating the family farm and in the responsibility, routine, and reward that came with it. (He even drove the combine this year).
He was born March 24, 1940, in Preston, the son of Henry and Avelda (Clark) Nolting. He is a 1958 graduate of the Preston High School where he enjoyed playing basketball. On May 9, 1959, Roger married Marjorie Stoll. They have celebrated 66 years of marriage.
Deeply rooted in his community of Preston, Roger served as a director of the Preston Mutual Insurance Company for 39 years and was active in organizations that reflected his values of service and fellowship, including the Preston Lions Club, Pork Producers, and 4-H Club. His faith was an important part of his life as well; he was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council.
After retiring from full-time farming, Roger continued to help his son on the farm, remaining connected to the work he cherished. He and his wife, Marjorie, enjoyed traveling together, creating memories across the years. At home, Roger could often be found watching sports—especially Iowa Hawkeyes games—or taking a drive in his beloved truck, a simple pleasure that brought him joy. He was also always ready for a good game of cards; he enjoyed playing so much that he played in various card clubs throughout his life.
Roger and Marjorie raised four children and were blessed with a growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His children include Daniel (Jill) Nolting of Preston; Dale (Robyn) Nolting of West Branch; Debra (Mark) Schroeder of DeWitt; and Darla (Scott) Striegel of Waterloo. In total, Roger was the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, with two on the way.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alveda; brother, Henry Nolting; and two sisters, Caroline Peterson and Janet Hehr.
A man of hard work, quiet dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community, Roger leaves behind a legacy rooted in commitment and kindness.
A visitation will be held 9-11am, Tuesday, December 2, 2025, followed by a service at 11 am at St John’s Lutheran Church, Preston. A luncheon will follow the service and burial will then be in Van Buren Cemetery, rural Preston.
