Roger was a great supporter of the Minnesota Junior Duck Stamp Program. During the many years that I was the coordinator of the program, I knew I could count on Roger's willingness to support the program. Roger donated prints of his paintings as awards to the winning students. I was grateful that Roger would always take the time to attend the annual award ceremony for the children. He felt strongly about environmental education for youth and worked tirelessly to promote it. I am deeply grateful for the friendship I shared with Roger. Roger taught me a lot and I will miss him.

Roger Preuss had a boundless enthusiasm for the natural world. His keen observational skills were a key to his success as a great wildlife artist. Roger had a special fondness for mushrooms. He served seven years as president of the Minnesota Mycological Society, an organization that promotes the study and appreciation of fungi. Another mission of MMS is to teach people how to identify and safely eat wild mushrooms. Under Roger’s leadership MMS membership mushroomed and became the vital organization it is today. In appreciation of Roger’s service, MMS awarded him lifetime membership.

I am also a past president of the Minnesota Mycological Society. Roger was a mentor to me. I am grateful to him for his support and wise counsel. My only regret is that I did not spend more time with him before his passing.

Roger and I have been friends for years we started first grade together and graduated together. I was sorry to hear of his death. I am also glad my daughter and I have been up to see him when he was still alive.
