Mr. Roger Bruce Schulz, son of the late Beverly (Paulson) Schulz and Alfred Schulz was born September 12,1957 in Joliet, Illinois and raised by his loving parents in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He attended public school in Otter Tail County and was a graduate of Fergus Falls High School Class of 1976.
He attended Zion Lutheran church as a child in Fergus Falls and later Immanuel Lutheran when the family moved to the farm in the countryside.
Roger entered the United States Army in October 1975 and completed Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, GA. He continued to serve in the US Army for a total of 37 years. He attended many training courses to include Jumpmaster Course, Rappel Master Course, and the Observer Controller Course. Earning the Ranger Tab was a highlight of his career as was graduating from the United States Army Sergeants Major Course completing his military education. Roger also had a Private Pilot's License.
Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Roger Schulz served in many leadership positions beginning as an Infantryman through Platoon Sergeant. He went on to serve as a Senior Instructor at the Army Light Fighter Academy at Fort McCoy, WI. He was then selected for the rank of Master Sergeant and focused on Operations culminating in a Chief of Operations position at Fort Lewis, WA. He was selected for Sergeant Major and served in this position at many posts around the United States. As a Command Sergeant Major, he was Commandant of the USA NCO Academy, Fort Lewis, WA, Commander, Company A, United States Sergeants Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas and the 3rd Medical Command, Fort Gillem, GA. In 2006 he was Task Force 3 and 3rd MEDCOM Command Sergeant Major, Camp Victory, Iraq. In 2007 he was selected for his final CSM position at AR-MEDCOM in Pinellas Park, FL where he served until his retirement in September 2012.
CSM Schulz's decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Danish Contingent March Medal.
After his retirement from the US Army, he enjoyed life on the Ranch with his cats, dogs, sheep and cows.
Roger was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He hunted throughout the world and Africa had a very special place in his heart,
He enjoyed teaching our youth and disabled veterans survival skills and gun safety. He served as President of Safari Club International Alamo Chapter.
Roger quietly and peacefully departed this earth surrounded by love on August 18, 2024, at his Ranch in McCoy, Texas
Roger had three children, Heather, Kyle, and Ashley who were lovingly inherited by his wife Tommie when they married in 2002.
In addition to his loving wife and children he is survived by his siblings, Robert (Linda), Michael (Tanya), and Fred (Cindy) Schulz, Virginia (Ginnie) (Allan) Berge and Joan (Jed) Pankow.
He is survived by 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, multiple nieces and nephews and friends from around the world.
Services for Roger are scheduled for Sunday, August 25, 2024, in the Hurley Funeral Home chapel, starting with a visitation at 1:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm. Services will conclude at the end of service.
