Roland Dullnig Obituary

Roland Eugene Dullnig passed away on November 26, 2022, one week shy of his 101st birthday. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on December 3, 1921, to Olin and Selma (Schiefelbein) Dullnig. He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Alice Rossman, and his two sisters, Florence Shaw and Dorothy Heiligmann. Roland is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Haisler and husband George; son, Roland E. Dullnig, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. Roland graduated from Fox Tech High School. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was assigned to the 668th Squadron of the 416th Bombardment Group. He was a Crew Chief maintaining the A20 and A26 light bomber aircraft. Serving in the European Theatre Operation, Roland received several military medals, including the U.S. Bronze Star Medal. He served four years in the military and was honorably discharged in January, 1946.
After military service, Roland worked in the printing trade for 40 years. He was co-owner and President of Fair Printing Company in San Antonio. He served as Past President of the Printing Industry of San Antonio and the San Antonio Club of Printinghouse Craftsmen. After retiring, Roland taught printing at McCollum High School for six years. He and his wife Evelyn were married for 69 years. They enjoyed square, round, line, and country western dancing, and Roland held the position of Printer for the Alamo Area Square and Round Dance Association Newsletter for 27 years. He and Evelyn enjoyed playing Mexican Train dominoes and spending time at their cottage on Lake McQueeney. Roland and Evelyn enjoyed attending many annual reunions of the 416th Bomb Group. Roland had the opportunity to visit the New England Air Museum in Hartford, Connecticut for a special dedication of one of the original 416 Bomb Group airplanes from World War II. Roland and his wife were both very active at Los Angeles Heights United Methodist Church holding many positions of leadership. In later years, Roland was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church.
Roland has been a member of Hermann Sons Association for 75 years and was a member of the German Texas Heritage Society in Austin, Texas.
In May of 2017, Roland participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. In February of 2020, Roland was "Knighted" by the French Consulate General and received the French Legion of Honor Medal for his courage, virtue, and bravery in France during World War II.
On Roland's 100th birthday, he was recognized by United States Congressman Joaquin Castro in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., honoring Roland's service to his country in World War II and his milestone birthday.
Roland will always be remembered as a fun and friendly guy who never met a stranger. His energy and enthusiasm for life carried him well into his senior years. He led a devoted Christian life and will be deeply missed by his family and all that knew him.

My deepest condolences to the family. Mr. Dullnig was my printing teacher at McCollum High School back in 1977. I learned so much from him and I am still thankful till this day. I continue doing printing , it's been over 40 years and I am still enjoying it. I am at Lanier High School teaching printing there. Thank you Mr. Dullnig. May you "RIP".
