Passing and Health
Dad passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025. After the loss of Mom last year, 2024, he became noticeably frail and weak. Despite his strength in battling multiple comorbidities, including his fight against Colon Cancer, Dad's health declined. He underwent palliative chemotherapy and enjoyed remission for over five years. However, the depression that followed Mom's passing deeply affected him, and it was evident in his eyes that he suffered greatly during this time.
Career at Chartered Bank
In the Philippines, Dad worked at Chartered Bank in Makati. This opportunity was made possible by Lolo, who also worked at the bank and recommended Dad for employment through a program that hired relatives of retiring employees. At the time, Dad was studying Commerce at the University of the East but chose not to complete his degree in order to take advantage of the bank's offer. He began his career in the cashier's office and later became a bookkeeper. Dad often spoke with pride about his efficiency in balancing the books at month-end, consistently finishing ahead of his colleagues. His skill in counting money was remarkable-so fast and precise, it was akin to watching a machine at work.
Mom's Memories and Their Story
Mom loved to share stories about Dad. She remembered seeing him riding in the front seat of a jeepney, his hair gleaming from excessive pomade and sprinkled with dandruff. This earned him the nickname "Charlie Balakubak," inspired by a television commercial for dandruff shampoo. The story of how Mom and Dad met is woven with family connections- Lolo Nano was Tatay Tommy's customer at Jimmy's Brother tailor shop, and Mom visited Dad's house to borrow vinyl records for a house party. Tatay Tommy knew that Lolo had a large collection of records, making this meeting possible. Another cherished memory is of a dance party at MAPUA, where Dad invited Mom to slow dance. During the dance, Mom noticed something hard in Dad's pocket; when she asked, he simply replied that it was "rolled-up coins."
Passions and Hobbies
Dad was an avid fan of the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco Giants. He made it a point to watch every game and would even record them to ensure he never missed a single moment. His dedication to his favorite teams reflected his deep love for sports and his commitment to following their every success and challenge. In addition to being a passionate sports fan, Dad was also athletic. He excelled in Ping- Pong, Bowling, and Badminton, demonstrating both skill and enthusiasm in each of these activities. His competitive nature shone through in friendly matches with family and friends, and he took great pride in his abilities. Beyond these sports, Dad was a talented chess player, enjoying the mental challenge and strategy the game required. One of Dad's most cherished hobbies was grilling. His barbecue pork became legendary among family and friends-everyone agreed it was simply the best. Although no one truly knows the exact recipe he used, there was always talk of a mysterious missing wart and his habitual nose scratching, which some joked might have been the secret ingredients in his special marinade. These stories and his unmistakable culinary skills created lasting memories for all who had the pleasure of sharing a meal with him.
Farewell
We will miss Dad dearly, but we find comfort in believing that he is now at peace and reunited with Mom.
