I met RV through his old Marine Gunnery Sgt. Thurman Miller. He was RV's Sgt. while they were fighting on New Britain in the Solomon Islands. RV allowed me to come to his home in the Dallas area to do a interview about his time in the Pacific. He was a fine gentleman and a tough Marine. We owe him and the fighting men of WW II all of our freedoms that some of us take for granted.

I was very fortunate to meet Sgt Burgin several times at local gun shows. He was a Man & Marine in every sense of the word. He was incredibly humble & kind. I am grateful for His immeasurable and selfless sacrifice that will never be forgotten. The world is a lesser place without Him.
RIP Marine.

Semper Fi Marine, rest in peace. We are so very fortunate that men such as yourself answer the call when our nation and the world needed them the most.

My wife and I just returned from the Pacific on April 24. We visited Pepeliu and Ngesebus where Mr. Burgin fought. We interviewed him on September 14, 2011 at his home shortly after the passing of his wife. He was gracious, to-the-point and willing to share his incredible story, which I show to my students here at the University of Delaware in a WWII seminar.

He was one of the greatest generation and we are all collectively that much poorer for his passing.

RIP, from a grateful citizen.

Semper Fi, Marine. Your memory will live forever as long as there is a Marine Corps.

It has been such an honor to have R.V. as my friend for the past ten years. I had the privilege of painting his portrait as a young Marine on Peleliu and working with him on a beach landing painting. My sons got to know him and we all learned so much from this very gracious and generous man on our visits. He served his country honorably both in the military and as a civilian. Texas and the U.S. has lost a true hero.
