Ronald Chappell Obituary

Ronald "Duck" Chappell Hertford - Ronald "Duck" Chappell, age 75, of Hertford, NC, passed away on December 21, 2025, at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, on August 9, 1950, to the late Charles Edward and Lucille Holmes Chappell.

Duck was a proud Vietnam veteran, serving in the United States Army's 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. He retired after 24 years of service as a dispatcher at the Department of Homeland Security. Duck started almost every day with good conversation and a cup of coffee with his many friends at Erp's Truck Stop. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson, deer hunting, and was a 30-year member of the Northeastern Sportsman Hunting Association.

He is survived by his loving wife, Clare, and his children, Eric (Megan), Ashley, Amanda (Darryl), Barry (Shaena) and Bill. He was a proud "Papa Duck" to his grandchildren, Tiffany (Danny), Aimee, Paige, Charleigh, Wren, Amy (Greg), Rachel (Sam), Lilly, Cassius, Cassidy, and Wyatt, and to his great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Olivia, and Lucas. He was a loving brother to Donald (Bonnie) and Joyce (Carl Wayne), and a dear friend to Jeff Keffer (Theresa) and family.

Duck was a well-respected member of his community with many friends, and he is already missed very deeply.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Twiford Memorial Chapel.

January 1, 2026

Clare, Eric, Ashley, Amanda, Barry and Bill, please accept the condolences of the Troopers of the 11th Armored Cavalry's veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia. Ronald was a dedicated and hard-charging warrior, one of us, one of our own. He served courageously with the Legendary Blackhorse Regiment in Headquarters Troop in 1970 and 1971 and will be remembered as an honorable trooper whose very presence brought comfort and support to his fellow troopers. His name will be included on the Honor Roll of our combat veterans and "may all generations call him blessed" as he was willing in the spirit of America to sacrifice and take up arms to protect and care for his fellow man. His service in Vietnam highlighted his bravery and valor and was guided with the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. As grateful Americans we should all pause and salute a man who was willing to put his life on the line for his country. As our burial liturgy states: " ... his life has not ended, merely changed ..." and as we were together then in Vietnam, we will be together again in the life hereafter, warmly embraced in the arms of our Heavenly Father.
Chaplain Bill, 11th ACVVC (Vietnam 71-72)
