Ronald L. Eagle Chasing, 78, of Eagle Butte, entered the spirit world, Wednesday, October 26, 2025, at Avantara – Arrowhead, Rapid City, SD.
Funeral services will be 9:00 a.m. MDT, Monday, November 3, 2025, at CRST Bingo Hall, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the bingo hall, with a procession from the 4-Mile at 5:00 p.m.
Ronald Lester Eagle Chasing was born on June 7, 1947, to Narcisse and Bernice (Condon) Eagle Chasing at Old Cheyenne Agency, SD. Ronald grew up in and around Cherry Creek, SD. He attended grade school in Red Scaffold and high school in Eagle Butte.
Like his brother, Pat, Ron enlisted in the Vietnam Conflict, but since his brother was already in Vietnam, Pat was stationed in Thailand. Following his time in the service, Ron was awarded the Purple Heart.
He served 6 years driving heavy machinery equipment. Later, Ron and Pat worked for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe as surveyors, surveying most of the dams and dug outs on the reservation. They also worked for the BIA Land Operations, and Ron also worked in maintenance for IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte.
Ronald married Lillian Black Bull in 1965 and to this union, Ramona, Rhonda, Ronnette, and Ronica were born. Lillian passed away in May of 1980. In 1995, he married Gwen Moore, together they had RJ, Camerahn, and Shayla.
Ron made a spiritual commitment with the help of his brother, Pat, in the Lakota Ways. He followed his beliefs and helped others to understand. He was a part of the Hohwoju Drum Group and kept them vital when he joined them. Beading was one of Ron's passions. He made many beautiful gifts for family and friends.
Ronald was blessed with seven children: Ramona (Maurice) Antell, Rhonda (Jared) Uses Many, Ronica (Shawn) Benson, RJ (Patience) Eagle Chasing, Camerahn (Ailsa) Eagle Chasing, and Shayla (Jordan) Eagle Chasing; adopted daughter, Zunika Jules; wife: Gwen Eagle Chasing; and his legacy continues with many grandchildren: LaLynn (Pablo) Hoosier, Mariah (Kobe) Antell, Colby Antell, Cori, Jarricka (Talyn) Uses Many, Jared Jr., Jhoni (Eitaun) Uses Many, Rhonnae, Randy (Caitlyn) Cook, Laurance, Isaiah, Lillian (Parra), Narcisse, Rhondee, Ethan Eagle Chasing, Kunu Jules, Waziya Jules, Ikaria Eagle Chasing; great grandchildren: Jayda, Daisha, Macyn, Brooklyn, Alexis, Armani, Athena, Damian; great-great grandchildren: Emmy, Kennedy, Payton, Khili, Kansas, Kyzier, Sage, Raz Taz, Kahliya Jai; siblings: Kay Palmer, Angel Kennedy, JoAllen Lightfield; special nephews: Troy and Travis Lightfield, Marcus Iron Hawk, Dean Dupris, Brian High Elk, Nathan Bison, Aaron Swan; numerous nieces and nephews; adopted dad, Roger Russell; uncles: Harold Condon and Zigman Hollow Horn,; hunka brother, Terry Martinez; hunka sisters: Eddie Iron Moccasin, Nancy West, Charlene Anderson; adopted brother, Clifford Demery
He is preceded in death by his father, Narcisse Eagle Chasing; mother and stepfather, Bernice and James Lightfield Sr.; both maternal and paternal grandparents; wife, Lillian; daughter, Ronnette; brothers, Pat and Gerald Eagle Chasing, Herbie Evans, Dale and Jim Jr. Lightfield; sisters: Patricia Eagle Chasing, LaVerna Straight Head, Virginia White Feather; adopted mother, Patty Russell; uncles, Pat, Andrew, Chester, Willie John, Geno and Darryl Condon; aunts, Rose Dupris, Angeline Swan, Pearl Hollow Horn, Christine Swan and Julianne Condon; uncles, Ernie Lightfield and Kenneth Jeffries; grandchildren: Brittany Buffalo and Waco Buffalo; and great granddaughter, Amiyah Pattan.
