Ronald Lewis Felton, a prominent figure in the Wilkes-Barre community, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2023, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp., at the age of 70.
He was born Jan. 10, 1953, in Ahoskie, N.C., to the late Sainty and Rubie Vann Felton.
After pursuing his education, Ron felt a strong sense of duty and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served diligently for four years. Upon completing his military service, he settled in the Wilkes-Barre area and became a system analyst, working for Prudential for over 15 years and IBM for five years before finding a role with the Times Leader newspaper. He later became part of the Social Security Administration until his health declined.
Ron's involvement in the community was profound, and he was a driving force for positive change. For an impressive 18 years spanning over three decades, he served as the president of the NAACP Wilkes-Barre Branch 2306, passionately advocating for civil rights and social justice. Furthermore, Ron held the position of Eastern Sectional Director of the Statewide NAACP, exemplifying his dedication to advancing equality on a broader scale.
Among his many accomplishments, Ron was instrumental in the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday for Wilkes-Barre City employees and the renaming of Coal Street Park to Martin Luther King Jr. Park. These efforts underscored his commitment to honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and fostering an inclusive and united community.
Ron was a past master and secretary of the Prince Hall Free Masons, Golden Rule Lodge 15 and found solace and strength in his faith at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre.
Ronald Lewis Felton is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Peggy Holmes Felton; and his adoring son, Ronald R. Felton and his wife, Janell, Chesapeake, Va. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to three cherished grandchildren, Talaya, Amarea and Anaya. Mrs.Felton and family,
It is with great sorrow that I´ve recently heard of the loss of Ron. His vision and his great passion for bringing the cause of hiring minority teachers to our school district is well noted. He and I became great friends and he supported me through many challenges and obstacles. I will never forget our bus trip to the Lincoln and MLK memorials in D.C. I will always appreciated our work together and the direction our school district has taken because of him...You and your family Mrs. Felton are in our prayers...May his memory be eternal...

Dear Peggy and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I never had the privilege
Of meeting Mr. Felton, but i wish i did. He sounds
Like the perfect match for the Peggy i knew. Two peas
In a pod. I still have the angel figurine Peggy gave me once. It is in my kitchen, where i can see it daily.
Peggy, so sorry for you and your family's loss. He
Was the perfect match for the Peggy i knew, and
I have the feeling she still is. May your family have
The peace and serenity that will guide you thru.
And reach out to me if you wish to. I will be here
For you. I think about you every time i look at my angel. As a Puerto Rican girl in this world of ours,
I trully appreciate all the hard work and effort Mr.
Felton and you and family have brought to our
Community. God bless you all for a job well done.
I am here for you!

Rapping Ronnie Ron as he was known was a great rapper. He lit up the mic with passion. You could always find him volunteering at the soup kitchen where he loved to serve up some hearty meals. May Big Ronnie Ron rest in peace !

Ron is one of the nicest people I have met on my 70 years of life. Back in 1992 he was one of the first people to welcome me at Prudential. He and his wife also made me welcomed at their awesome cookouts. He was a great friend and tireless advocate for the community. His larger than life heart and presence will be missed.
