Waddington: Ronald N. Field, age 87, passed away on September 3, 2025, at Claxton Hospital surrounded by his family. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 11:00am at St. Mary's Church in Waddington with Reverend Gary Giroux presiding.

Ronald was born on Onondaga Hill on October 8, 1937, to Raymond and Annette (Hessler) Field. Ron led a life filled with family and adventure, beginning on the family farm in Onondaga, riding his horse to school. After graduating high school, he left college, enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas during the Korean war. Upon his return from Korea, he became a deputy sheriff with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office before joining the New York State Police in 1962. Ron married the love of his life, Stephanie Sarsfield, on July 11, 1964. He retired from the state police in 1984 and relocated the family to Wasilla, Alaska. The family later returned home to Waddington and Ron took a position with Kinney Drugs. Ron enjoyed his time at Kinney's, ultimately rising to Vice President of Loss and Prevention and Human Resources before his retirement from the company.

Ron's service to his community included his role in the founding of the Waddington Minor Hockey Association and service on the Board of Education at Madrid-Waddington. After raising his family and retiring, Ron had more time to enjoy his many interests. He was an avid reader and historian on American history. He enjoyed country concerts, listening to classical opera, and watching westerns. He wintered in Florida and was a dedicated Bruins, Yankees, and Cowboys fan. His fishing trips extended from Alaska to the Amazon rainforest. Ron loved to be on the water, especially the St. Lawrence. He was a river man and avid fisherman, who not only caught but prepared delicious fish dinners. When the summers ended, Ron could be found in the woods. He was a seasoned deer hunter, hunting locally, the Southern Tier, Alaska and the western portion of the North American continent.

Ron was honored in 2021, as a member of Mission 15 Honor Flight, to thank him for his service to the country he loved. Ron had an active and well lived life, but his biggest role was that of husband, father and grandfather. He was a dedicated husband to his wife Stephanie and together they built a family of four children. Ron was an active grandfather, spending his time teaching his grandsons and granddaughters to drive cars, boats, four-wheelers and tractors. He passed his love for the outdoors to his grandchildren, teaching them to hunt and fish. Most importantly, Ron spent many hours just visiting with them, telling stories, asking them questions and knowing what was going on in each of their lives.

He is predeceased by his wife Stephanie and son Derrick. He is survived by his children, Scott (Brenda) Field of Cicero, NY; Terrence (Catherine) Field of Waddington, NY; and Claudia (Field) Young of Fairfax, VA; seven grandchildren, Newell (Paige), Kaleigh (Harrison), Logen, Kyle (Allison), Teryn, Ava and Stephanie; one great granddaughter, Kennedy; a brother Doug Field of Fort Mill, SC along with several nieces and nephews.
