Ronald Lavigne Jr. Obituary

Ronald Francis Lavigne Jr. departed this life on April 17, 2024, and transitioned peacefully to his Heavenly Father after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Ronald was born April 4, 1962, to his nurturing and supportive parents Ronald Lavigne Sr. and Betty Mack Lavigne. Raised in a household rooted in faith, he was baptized at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and was confirmed in his faith on July 1, 1973. A lifelong New Orleanian, Ronald was educated in the Orleans Parish school system. He attended Marion Abramson High School where he cherished his time, especially as a starting player on the basketball team. Known lovingly as "Man" by family and "Smiley" by friends, his warmth and vibrant smile made him a joy in any gathering large or small. Ronald's welcoming and extroverted personality, instantly connected with everyone he encountered. He was known for being jovial, possessing a caring nature and a passion for life that was palpable. He loved people and loved to share a story or his wisdom no matter the setting. He had incredible artistic talents that were shown through his paintings, often drawing inspiration from loved ones and places that influenced him. Ronald dedicated 20 years of his career to serving at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, Department of Corrections and enjoyed a 15-year tenure at Harrah's Casino, where he met his beloved wife, Tasha. Before his diagnosis, he ventured into offshore work, a journey that developed his passion for fishing. Ronald is survived by his wife, Latasha Gaines Lavigne, six wonderful children Rolanda Lavigne, Ronnika Lavigne, Kenyira Martin (Timothy), Hysan Gaines, Ronald Lavigne III, and his baby girl; Aviance Lavigne, five beautiful grandchildren; Destinee Lavigne, James London Jr., Zayden, Triton, and Solar Martin, his parents Ronald and Betty Lavigne, his loving siblings; Sheila Henry (Barry), Rhonda Andrews (Zachary), Reynard Lavigne (Trina) and Reynell Lavigne (Dwynesha), his favorite Aunt Mary and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, childhood friends including Keith Hooks and the Marigny Street Gang. Family and friends are invited to attend the Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, May 4, 2024, for 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1625 Annette Street, New Orleans, LA 70116. I worked with Mr. Smiley, as I called him, at Touro Neuro Rehab Center as his occupational therapist over the last few months. It was such a joy to get to know him and spend time working on his goals of returning to his beloved hobbies, helping at the apple shop (those are SO good, he brought us some to try) and especially drawing and painting. He drew a beautiful portrait of myself and his physical therapist, Amy, which we have hanging in our office when he discharged from therapy with us. I will look it at it now daily and smile remembering such a wonderful man. Our deepest condolences and prayers for peace to his family who he spoke about non stop, especially his grandchildren. Sincerely, Tatiana, OTR/L, Touro NRC
