Ronald Long Obituary

Ronald Irvin Long's soul ascended into heaven on May 26, 2024. Born January 17, 1936, in Union County, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Earl Thomas and Ethel Frances Helms Long. He attended Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina, where he focused his studies in business administration. He was a US Air Force veteran who served his country honorably for four years. Ron enjoyed a successful career in the consumer lending industry that spanned more than 30 years. He received numerous awards and recognition for his efforts and served on many association boards because of his expertise in the industry.
Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen Union Long; son, Christopher Long of Columbia; brother, Earl Thomas Long, Jr. (Diane) of North Carolina; and sister, Jane McHenry of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Johnny Long, Peggy Elms, and Tommy Joe Long. Karen's siblings and extended family also mourn his loss.
Ron was affectionately known as ""Rhino Ron"" by many of his friends and associates, reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit and his ""Take Charge"" approach to all aspects of his life. He welcomed challenges and faced them with tenacity and perseverance. He was a mentor to many ""Young Rhinos"" seeking success in their endeavors. He surrounded himself with ""Fellow Rhinos"" that evolved into lifelong friendships.
Ron and Karen enjoyed entertaining family and friends in their home and were always looking for a reason…be it holidays, golf tournaments, South Carolina football or just because. Familiar slogans Ron was remembered for were, ""If you're ever in the neighborhood, please stop by"" and ""If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know"". He never met a stranger and went out of his way to make people comfortable in uncomfortable situations.
Ron enjoyed boating, fishing, and leisurely exploring the intercostal waterways with his brother-in-law, Jimmy Carnes. He was enamored with the wildlife and beauty of the lowcountry. Golfing with his best buddies was his passion for years and a focal part of his retirement years.
Relaxing vacations, dancing under the stars, and all genres of music were some of Ron and Karen's most memorable times. Ron introduced Granite Dog Long into the family, and he was a true blessing eliciting smiles and laughter every day in the Long household.
Ron loved Karen and his son, Chris, with a vengeance. He was so proud of Chris and took every opportunity to show him. He enjoyed having Chris working at his side for years of adventures and tried to teach him ""Most"" of what he knew. He made sure God was an important part of his life, and doing the right thing, no matter what the consequences, was the only way. He instilled the belief that all people are created equal, and generosity, in words and actions, was a must. Ron and Karen met 47 years ago and never looked back. He was always able to openly express his love. Even during his final years, when his memory was fading, he never stopped saying, ""I love you"". From a forgotten origin but fitting for Ron…""I fear you have lost me as I have lost myself. Yet I am the lucky one. For I shall not know the end when it presents itself. So, you will suffer for me and although I have forgotten many things, I do still remember love. I have loved my life and I have been loved. Loved in a way we only dream of. Loved by God, Karen, Chris, my family, my friends"". Ron will be forever remembered for his captivating blue eyes and mischievous smile. If he ever crossed paths with you, be it known, you were the better for it.
The family thanks all the physicians and support staff in our community who cared for Ron along his journey. Thank you to those who cared for and loved Ron at Wildewood Downs and to Tonia Shepard and her Agape care team for their guidance and emotional support. A heartfelt thank you to our dear friend, Kaneisha Thomas, for loving Ron and always being there for him and to Diane Crump for her friendship and devotion to Ron. Last, but not least, the CM Tucker Nursing Center for South Carolina veterans, a hidden jewel in our community. The medical, administrative, nursing and support staff far exceeded our expectations. Dr. Davis and her support team focused on Ron's quality of life from day one, and the family is forever grateful. Finally, Karen would like to thank her sister, Jan, for never letting go of her hand.
The funeral service for Mr. Long will be held at 11:30 o'clock, Wednesday, June 5th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC with Rev. Steven C. ""Chipper"" Long officiating. A private burial with military honors will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC.
The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service at the funeral home beginning at 10:30 o'clock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Richland County Sheriff's Office, c/o K-9 Unit, 5623 Two Notch Rd, Columbia, SC 29223.
