It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Ronald Martin on May 15, 2023. He departed this world suddenly, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.
Born on April 18, 1960, Ronald Martin was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a loving husband to Melanie and a devoted parent to Lauren and Jason. He was a pillar of strength and support, always putting the needs of his family first. Although many family members and friends lived great distances apart, he made a note of having almost daily conversations in order to stay current in their lives.
Ronald Martin lived a life filled with passion and dedication. He served the New York City Police Department for 22 years, rising to the rank of Detective Sergeant. He also served as a First Responder at Ground Zero. Prior to his passing, he was a Harm Reduction Law Enforcement Consultant for the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition for 11 years. He was extremely proud of his work training and assisting Police Officers in other agencies across the United States in the use and acceptance of Naloxone (NARCAN) – the drug used to treat overdoses in emergency situations. He and his associate, Tessie, were instrumental in the lobbying and passing of The Good Samaritan Law in North Carolina which prohibits the arrest and prosecution of any person who assists someone seeking medical attention at a healthcare facility for an overdose. Ronald's tireless work ethic, unwavering integrity, and commitment to excellence served as an inspiration to many.
Beyond his professional life, Ronald had a wide range of interests and hobbies. In addition to his love of the Marvel Universe and DC Universe, he was an avid sports fan: his favorite teams being the New York Giants, the New York Knicks, and the New York Mets. Ronald served the community as a youth football coach for the All-American Football League and Brooklyn Skyhawks (Pop Warner) for more than 20 years. While studying at Columbia University, he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The Core Values that were reinforced by his membership in this organization helped to further shape his sense of service to others.
Ronald had a kind and generous soul, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His compassion knew no bounds, and he dedicated his time and resources to charitable causes close to his heart. He touched countless lives through his selflessness and unwavering support.
His loving family and friends will deeply miss Ronald. He is predeceased by his father Charlie; his mother Vernetta (Dolly); and his son Jason. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Melanie Martin; his daughter Lauren Martin; his brothers Charlie Martin and Gregory Martin, and a host of extended family members and friends. Those who were fortunate enough to know him will forever cherish his memory.
