Virgenmina Ortiz

With great sorrow but deep gratitude for her life, we announce the passing of our dear mother/grandmother Virgenmina Ortiz on October 12, 2025. She passed away surrounded by her children/grandchildren at the age of 80.
Born in 1945, she grew up in the small town of Rio Chiquito in Ponce, PR. She spent her early years as a Certified Nurse Assistant and moved on to become a homemaker. She later moved to Chicago where she grew a deep appreciation and love for the community, Mexican culture and music. Virgenmina was known for her sass, love of music (dancing and singing), storytelling and more than anything, her vibrant and colorful fashion.
A woman warrior of unwavering faith and resilience, Virgenmina dedicated her life to spreading love, dancing like no one's watching, and living every breath with intention. She was lovingly nicknamed Welita, Shorty and the family Queen. She was like no other and though she came from humble beginnings, she made it a point to pay it forward every chance she could, leaving an imprint on every life she touched. Her presence and bright aura will be deeply missed.
Virgenmina is survived by five children, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Calling hours will be Sunday, October 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT. A remembrance of life service will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 20, at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, followed by interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford, CT. Con gran tristeza, pero profundo agradecimiento por su vida, anunciamos el fallecimiento de nuestra querida madre y abuelita Virgenmina Ortiz. Virgenmina falleció el domingo, 12 de Octubre de 2025, rodeada de sus hijos y nietos a la edad de 80 años.
Nacida en 1945, creció en el pequeño pueblo de Río Chiquito, en Ponce, Puerto Rico. Pasó sus primeros años como asistente de enfermera y luego pasó a ser ama de casa. Más tarde se mudó a Chicago, donde desarrolló un profundo aprecio y amor por la comunidad, la cultura mexicana y la música. Virgenmina era conocida por su chispa, su amor por la música (bailar y cantar), sus cuentos de historias y, sobre todo, por su estilo vibrante y colorido.
Mujer guerrera y luchadora, de fe inquebrantable, Virgenmina dedicó su vida a brindar su amor, a bailar como si nadie la estuviera mirando y a vivir cada respiro con intención. Sus apodos eran cariñosamente Welita, Shorty y la Reina de la familia. Era única y, aunque provenía de un origen humilde, se propuso retornar las bendiciones que recibía, dejando una huella en cada vida que tocaba. Su presencia y su brillante aura serán profundamente extrañadas.
A Virgenmina le sobreviven cinco hijos, diecisiete nietos, veintidós bisnietos y un tataranieto.
Detalles del servicio: El velorio será el domingo 19 de octubre del 2025 en la funeraria Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen, localizada en el 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT, desde la 1:00 p.m. a las 3:00 p.m.
El servicio conmemorativo de su vida se efectuara el lunes 20 de octubre del 2025 a las 11:00 a.m. en la funeraria Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen, localizada en el 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT, seguido por el entierro en el cementerio Cedar Hill, 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114.
