Ronald Lee Smoyer M.D.

Ronald Lee Smoyer, M.D., of Pawleys Island, SC, passed away on December 1, 2024 at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital at the age of 84. He was born April 11, 1940 in Allentown, PA to the late Donald & Hilda (Kelly) Smoyer. Ronald was a 1958 graduate of Emmaus High School in Emmaus, PA. He went on to attend Kutztown University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962, and later went on to earn a masters degree also from Kutztown University. Following graduation, Ronald taught at Salisbury High School in Allentown, PA from 1962-1970. It was in 1970 that he decided to enroll in medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA and graduated in 1974 with his medical degree. Ronald served the community as a general practitioner in Johnstown, PA from 1974 until his retirement in 1996. In his free time, Ronald enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, playing guitar, reading, and riding his motorcycle. Ronald was also an avid student of the Bible and studied and underlined many versions of the Bible during his studies. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Charlotte F. (Reichard) Smoyer; daughter, Susan L. Matacavage and her husband Michael; son, Ronald L. Smoyer II; granddaughter, Mikailyn G. Matacavage; and a sister, Sharon R. Searfoss. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
