It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ron Wong on 31 March 2025. He was born in Sacramento, CA on October 9,1947 to late parents, Henry & Margaret Wong. He was preceded by his brother, Bob.
Ron leaves behind: son, Mark, sisters Debbie (Henny) and Pattie (Jack), sister-in-law, Joey, nephew James (Quyen), nieces Lauren (Andy)and Kimberly, grandnephews & nieces, 3 aunts, numerous cousins & an extended Memphis family.
Ron moved to Memphis in 1960. He attended Westwood High School and U of M (Memphis State University) on a music(saxophone) scholarship. He spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy. Ron retired from FedEx after 34 years in 2019 with his last 12 years in the Corporate Communications Community Relations department. While working, Ron still pursued his lifelong passion- fishing -with over 70 years of experience. He was the only two-time winner of the St. Jude’s Bass Classic when it was just an individual competition.
Upon retirement, he was able to take that a step further, contributing and participating in different sectors of the fishing world. You could hear Ron on the Outdoors with Larry Rea Radio Show -he had been a cohost since 2010. He was also a Media contributor & photographer for American Crappie Trail, B'n'M Poles, Legends of the Outdoors, Major League Fishing, Mid-South Hunting and Fishing News & Mississippi Sportsman to name a few. His other passion was cooking and volunteering. This would lead him to the many AutoZone Liberty Bowl and Make-A-Wish Mid-South events as a photographer and/or donating his infamous fish frys.
Curiously, Ron never attended Ole Miss but was a die-hard Rebel fan and wouldn't miss a tailgate in the "Grove".
Ron's 'homecoming' will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119 (901) 767-8930 on May 2, 2025 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm in the Riverside Chapel. His final resting in Auburn, CA (TBD)
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Make-A-Wish Mid-South, or The Fishers of Kids Angler Academy.

Deepest condolences to all of Ron's family and friends. I worked with him for many years at FedEx Express. An exceptional fisherman, he was perfectly suited to craft his many memorable "stories". Rest in peace, Ron!

Ron was an ethusiast - always adventurous & open to try anything new that had a positive outcome, and with a happy spirit. His presence will be missed by many.

I remember Ron Wong from the Fishing Village a the Great Outdoors Festival at Shelby Farms. He taught kids how to fish for bass and had a great time. He was a friendly, larger than life kind of guy who never met a stranger and loved to share his passion for fishing. His Brother, Robert, was also a friend.
