Ronyell Whitaker

Ronyell Deshawn Whitaker, a former professional football defensive back whose career took him from Norfolk, Virginia, to the National Football League and beyond, died Sunday, February 22, 2026. He was 46 years old.

Born March 19, 1979, Whitaker grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a star football player at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk before continuing his athletic career at Virginia Tech, where he played defensive back for the Hokies and became a respected leader on the field.

Whitaker entered the professional ranks in 2003 as an undrafted free agent signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He later saw action with the Minnesota Vikings and had a brief stint with the Detroit Lions. His playing career also included time in NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before his retirement in 2009.

After his playing days ended, Whitaker remained connected to the sport and to mentoring young athletes. He served as a defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School in Minnesota from 2014 to 2018. Beyond coaching, he was the CEO and owner of Whitaker Group, LLC, a real estate services firm focused on relocation transactions and short sales.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell paid tribute to Whitaker's legacy, noting, "He was a humble, soft-spoken, and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots. As a player, he was disciplined, dedicated and resilient despite facing adversity multiple times as injuries sidelined him throughout his career."
