Obituary For Rose Murtagh
In Loving Memory of Rose Murtagh
On a clear winter day, on December 22, 2025, an angel came and gently called Rose Murtagh's name. With tenderness, she was taken by the hand and guided to her place in heaven. At the age of almost 93, Rose passed away peacefully at her home, embraced by the love of her family.
She was born in
Manhattan, New York, in 1933, to Rosario and Maria Grazia (Cavolina) Aloisi. Growing up on 96th street, Rose lived a life filled with love, family, and devotion to those around her. Rose graduated from Julia Richmond High School and briefly worked for the Army Intelligence Office. Alongside her professional pursuits, she was known for her exceptional baking and cooking skills, as well as her enthusiasm for vegetable gardening.
During her early twenties, Rose cherished summers spent with relatives in Staten Island. It was during these memorable visits that she met her future husband, George. Their connection blossomed, leading to their marriage in 1957. Together, Rose and George shared more than sixty years of marriage, building a life filled with laughter and companionship until George's passing in 2017. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Christophers parish in Grant City and attended weekly with her dear friend Barbara.
Rose and George were devoted parents to three children, providing a loving and supportive home. The couple treasured the time spent on special trips, creating lasting memories with family and friends. Their adventures included multiple vacations in the Adirondacks, where they enjoyed the beauty of nature and the company of loved ones. Rose and George also commemorated their 35th wedding anniversary with a memorable celebration in Bermuda, and later embarked on a cruise to Alaska, further adding to the tapestry of experiences they shared.
Rose's adventurous spirit led her to travel with friends, enjoying several cruises and a memorable journey to Italy. She was an active member of a group affectionately called the "CRAFT" club, an acronym for "Can't Remember a &%#% Thing." The group took great joy in designing a club t-shirt emblazoned with the CRAFT logo, which sparked endless laughter and conversation whenever worn together. The club would also hold weekly high-stake penny card games, where laughter and camaraderie filled the room.
Shared meals with loving, attentive and long-time neighbors Tom and Sandra became treasured rituals, often accompanied by her delicious baked goods that were also a favorite among family and friends. In addition, many other neighbors played a supportive role in her life. Jimmy, Anthony, Angelo, Marie and Wayne were always watchful, ensuring her well-being and offering their presence whenever needed. Their attentiveness contributed to a comforting and secure environment in the neighborhood. On very rare occasions, Rose delighted in raising a glass of Jameson with her closest companions, creating fond memories during those lighthearted moments. When
it came to shopping and afternoon tea, she bonded with her kind friend Peggy (PIC), and the two were inseparable on these outings.
Rose had a special place in her heart for dogs and cared for several beloved pets throughout her life. After the loss of her most recent dog, Mickey, in 2023, she continued by forming bonds with her neighbors and their dogs, always keeping treats ready. The dogs would pause at her gate, waiting for her to greet them, eagerly awaiting a treat
before continuing their walks, much to the amusement of their owners. Rose also enjoyed feeding birds each day, although she faced a daily challenge keeping the pigeons away to ensure the smaller birds could enjoy her offerings. These efforts became a source of humor as Rose often recounted her lighthearted struggles with the pigeons.
Rose departed this world with grace and tranquility, leaving behind cherished memories for all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her three children: George Murtagh (Rita), Richard Murtagh (Nancy), and Julianne Moore (Vincent Redmond). She was a cherished grandmother to Nicholas Moore (Mariya), Robert Moore (Kristin), Lauren, Matthew, and Alexander Murtagh. She recently became a great grandmother to Nick and Mariya's newborn, Mia
Rose. She also survived with thirteen nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her beloved brothers, Cosimo, Thomas, and Salvatore.
