Rose RSM Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 14, 2026.
Sister Rose Morris, RSM, age 92, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died peacefully on February 22, 2026, at McAuley Convent in Merion, PA.

Rose was born on March 30, 1933, in Philadelphia to Irish parents, Michael Morris from County Tyrone, Ireland, and Mary Margaret Morris from Philadelphia. Rose was the firstborn child, happily welcoming her siblings, Michael and Kathleen. The early death of her sister Kathleen at age 7 tendered Rose's compassionate heart for those dealing with painful loss. A lasting bond of love and friendship with her brother, Mike, provided her with support, comfort, and joy throughout her life. Rose's deep faith was nurtured in the loving Morris household in a predominantly Irish Catholic neighborhood, as well as in her education at St. Rose of Lima Elementary School and West Catholic High School.

Rooted in a profound love of God and a desire to dedicate herself to a life of service to God's people, Rose answered the call to religious life and entered the Convent of Mercy in September 1951. Given the religious name Sister Denis Mary, Rose chose "Fiat!" as her motto and celebrated her patron's feast, Saint Rose of Lima, on August 23rd. Over the next 74 years, Rose devoted herself to living out God's will, modeling her life on the example of Jesus and pouring herself out in love for all the people she encountered.

Rose began her early years of ministry as an educator, serving as both a teacher and a principal in various parish schools served by the Sisters of Mercy. Degrees from Villanova and Temple Universities equipped Rose to teach and lead with knowledge, creativity, and enthusiasm. Her final years in active ministry were spent at Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg, VA. For 33 years, Rose devoted herself tirelessly to bringing the love of God to the children, faculty, staff, families, and community at Walsingham Academy.

In community life, Rose will be remembered as a gatherer, a generous giver, a lover of humor, always affirming others, and reaching out with a tender heart of mercy for the poor and the sick. In her retirement years, Rose never lost interest in our ministries, offering her prayers for each one's needs. Nor did she lose her love for walking! May our final memories of Rose walking the wings of our beloved McAuley Convent be her legacy to us and a reminder of her commitment to walking always in the footsteps of Jesus. In fact, one can picture Rose walking herself right into heaven, into the loving arms of God! Go now in peace, faithful friend of God, as you take our love with you into paradise!
