Rosetta Grant Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Davis Funeral Home - Mattapan on Mar. 22, 2023.
Rosetta Veronica Potter Grant was born January 10, 1931 in Woburn, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of the late Winthrop and Dorothea (Canada) Potter. She is the fourth of ten children. Six sisters and two brothers preceded her in death, David, Winthrop and Leola Potter, Dorothea Powell, Virginia Clark, Mildred Smith, Bernice Holland and Winifred Powell.
Rosetta graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School in 1948 and later graduated from UMASS Boston earning a Bachelor of Science in Management. She completed several credits towards an MBA when she was offered an executive position with the Department of Mental Rehabilitation. She later retired from her position as Quality Assurance Coordinator after 26 years.
Rosetta was a member of the Historic Charles Street A.M.E Church since she was 12 years old. Over the years she served as an Usher, 1st Vice President of the Missionary Society, Sunday School Teacher, Church Mother and was consecrated as a deaconess at last year's Annual A.M.E. conference.
Rosetta married Daniel "Danny" Grant in June 1952, and from that union they had three children who all preceded her in death, Pauline (who only lived ten days), David and Carole Potter Grant. Rosetta was a loving mother and always put her kids first.
In the sixties when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Boston, Rosetta dropped her children David and Carole off at school and got on the bus that took the freedom riders to meet Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Reverend Abernathy. It was on that long walk through Boston, that her passion for community involvement began. Rosetta was an avid campaigner for the local black candidates, always lending a hand to the underprivileged.
She joined the Order of the Eastern (OES) in 1982. She was an enthusiastic member and she always said she was inspired from her membership as a child in the OES Youth Group. She was Past Worthy Matron of the Mt. Zion Chapter but served in many capacities in the Prince Hall Grand Chapter OES. She served as Grand Secretary, Grand Assistant Lecturer, Co-Chairman of the Retreat; 3-time OES Queen, Chairperson of Prayer Breakfast, all with dignity, faithfulness, love and pride. She was Past Most Ancient Matron of Sarah R. Hall Court, Heroines of Jericho; Past Most Ancient Grand Matron of Prince Hall Grand Court, Heroines of Jericho; Member of Prince Hall Assembly, Order of the Golden Circle; Past President of the Past Matrons/Past Patrons Council, and in charge of sponsoring the Annual Garden Party for the Frank E. Carter Scholarship Awards, which she even held in her own beautiful garden. Her influence for good was far-reaching.
Rosetta was a quarter century member of the Urban League Guild. This meant that she was recognized and received an award from the National Council of Urban League Guilds for her dedication to service and volunteerism. She was still active in the local Urban League Guild after 30 years. She served as ULEM President for at least 2 terms and was instrumental in founding/setting up the Guild's Award luncheons throughout the years as well as planning the December High Teas at Boston College. Rosetta was also a member of the Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, although she had not been active in recent years.
Rosetta is survived by her sister Gladys Noiles of Boston, MA, daughter in-law Bobbie Holmes-Grant of Las Vegas, NV and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
