Rowena May Balvanz, known to her loved ones as May or Maisy, passed away on August 10, 2023, at the age of 74 in Columbia, MO. Born in October of 1948, in
Watseka, IL to Floyd "Slim" Seaton and Elsie May Runyon Seaton. Maisy was a remarkable individual who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A spunky force to be reckoned with, Maisy had a personality like no other - she had sass, smarts, and a sense of humor that could spark an explosion of laughter. She always had a clever comeback ready to charm anyone in her vicinity.
In addition to her remarkable personality, Maisy had a fulfilling and meaningful life. She dedicated herself to being a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Vernon, of 50 years. Maisy's family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her brother Ray, Randy (Tria) and sister Elizabeth (Cecil), as well as her five children, Clark (fiance Janine), Kerri, William, Joseph (Tina), Michael (Misty); 18 grandchildren, Justin, Brent, Sarah (Teagan), Chrisy (Bradley), Alex, Jessica (Casey), Bianca, Sean, Brendan, Willow, Bradley (Mina), Abigale (Wade), Nathaniel, Madison, Garrison, LillyMay, Braiden, Zachary; and 8 great-grandchildren, Rilyn, Gryson, Iris, Drystan, Gideon, Cassidy, Cricket, Charlotte, plus two more on the way.
Maisy's children held a special place in her heart. She was a loving and caring mother. Maisy's nurturing spirit was so great, she raised her two stepchildren, three children, three grandchildren, and additional four grandchildren for two and a half years plus all the "weeds" that came to her door. Her love knew no bounds.
Maisy explored various roles, showcasing her versatility and determination. She worked as a baker, a cashier, an activity director, CNA, Personnel at Nursing Home, Clerk at Auction House, Pharmacist Assistant, Antique dealer and more. However, her most cherished role was being a mom. Maisy's unwavering love and guidance shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren, leaving an indelible impact on their futures.
Among her many accomplishments, she fearlessly held the title of Army National Guard Wife, ensuring the homefront remained strong and steady while her husband served with honor. As a proud supporter of her husband's service in the Army National Guard from 1973 to 2005, Maisy knew the military lingo like the back of her hand.
When Maisy needed a break from marching through life's ups and downs, she had a passion for antiquing and was always eager to update a room in her house. These activities brought her immense joy. Vern may have come home to a gut kitchen, a room with no floor, or another wallpapering job from time to time, but all the more reason he loved her. Decatur newspaper wrote a full article about her tackling her home.
To honor May's incredible adventure, a celebration of life party will take place on October 22 at the campsite. Bring your most entertaining stories and let's share and party like Maisy would want. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions go towards completing her cherished quilts - they will be passed down to her great-grandchildren - a touchable legacy that will keep her warmth forever present.
Maisy was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd "Slim" and Elsie May Seaton, brother, Charlie.
Rowena May Balvanz, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, will forever be remembered for her vibrant personality, unwavering love, and selfless nature. She leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
