Roxanne Gray Obituary

Roxanne Gray

1961-2024

Roxanne was born August 13, 1961 to Dean and Marie Gray and died sometime early February, 2024. The date of death is important because it is inexact. She died unbeknownst and alone, and that is a significant and terrible sadness.

Roxanne had a beautiful sparkle in her eye. It manifested in myriad ways, but the best was "I see you and I know you, and I hear you saying all this stupid stuff and you should probably be embarrassed, but I still love you with all my heart." It was knowing, but non-judgmental. It was an honoring of her unique insight without the need of further tiresome expression while giving nod to her keen sense of truth and a harmless, but pointed, middle finger to convention.

There was never anyone more enjoyable to talk to about nothing. Her humor and perspective were so instructive, distinctive and delightful that she could tell a story about the most objectively pedestrian thing and hold her listener in utterly amused thrall.

She was super talented, and an absolute ham when moved to it. She played singles on two back-to-back Judge Memorial high school state championship tennis teams (first singles, senior year). She danced the Charleston. She somewhat incredibly, knowing her usual reticence to sing, soloed "It's My Party" in front of her entire school, and was an unapologetic scene stealer in comedic sketches. She taught in the Murray School district for twelve years and loved her students and they loved her. She also did significant stints at Holiday Inn and Zions Bank. She was beyond financially secure in retirement and a resounding success by almost all metrics.

Roxanne was also an alcoholic. She took to drink quite a bit later than most Catholic school kids, but she took to it gamely. It's hard to say exactly but best guess is that sometime late twenties early thirties, alcohol evolved from enjoyable diversion to her most consistent companion. She managed to control it enough to stay functional by skillfully picking and choosing her dedicated drinking events, but the demon got the best of her. It was so darned persistent, always lingering just top of mind. She acknowledged this demon openly towards the end, but stubbornness precluded her from ever asking for or accepting help. It would have felt too much like failure.

We will remember her fully committed full-body hugs, her huge heart, her extraordinary sense of humor. We will remember her beautiful giggle, which she mostly couldn't stop, especially if propriety demanded. We will remember her honesty and how quick she was to tears and how ready she was, always, to share her love and abundant joy and how she was always so happy for our happiness.

Awaiting the coroner's report, we brothers are heartened by a notion. She died sober. On her couch. Stubbornly alone. In control of her faculties and at least temporarily free of her demon. What leads us to believe this is a note she wrote to herself on her fridge, and the otherwise absolutely incongruous fact that there was not a drop of drinkable alcohol in the house. Most likely, this last effort to get sober is what killed her. But she did it. On her terms. A grave but gorgeous final act.

Roxanne is preceded in death by Dean and Marie. Those that adoringly abide yet, are as follows: her brother Jerry and wife Kindra, her brother Bill and wife Tamy, her brother John and wife Heather, her nephews Jesse Brown, Henry and Chuck, her nieces Abigail and Sadie.

There will be a remembrance. Details, once defined, will be shared.

Jerry, Bill, John, & family, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. May you find peace and comfort in shared memories of Roxanne. I will never forget nor fail to appreciate the kindness Roxanne showed me, while playing tennis; kindness I was not owed yet she afforded me nonetheless. I empathize deeply with your loss and am sending my best prayers and wishes.

Jerry, Bill and John:
I am so sad and sorry to hear about Roxanne´s passing. I was close to Roxanne all through grade school and Judge and have known the family since kindergarten. I will always remember her as kind and caring with a laugh all her own. May you find peace and comfort in the love that surrounds you from family and friends

This obituary perfectly captured the warmth and care Roxanne showed to the people in her life. Roxanne and I became very close friends while working together at Zions Bank, and shared many uncontrollable laughing sessions that often got us in trouble. She was a comfort to me at many hard points in my life and was kind enough to let me live in her home when my living situation changed abruptly. During the period of mourning her father´s passing, I had the honor of supporting her in the way she had supported me. We shared a very special friendship that was full of love, advice, comfort, and joy. On the outside it may have seemed unconventional because I´m in my 20´s and she was in her 60´s, but to me, Roxanne was the best friend I could have ever had. We made it a point to see each other when I stopped working at the bank and moved into my own place, often going to brunch at Finn´s to spend time together. Learning of her passing has been an incredible shock as I had spoken to her right before the time of her passing, but I am immensely proud of her brave effort to become sober. I loved and will continue to love Roxanne, and I hope she is resting free now. I´m so sorry to her family and hope you can take solace in how many of us loved her and were touched by having her in our lives.

Roxanne and I were tight in elementary school, which I attended through 6th grade at Cosgriff. I went a different direction for school losing touch with my early childhood classmates. Yet interestingly enough I too played tennis at Highland High. I am certain that we would have been doubles partners had we stayed in touch. I remember Roxanne always happy, smiling and laughing. I also remember her parents...mostly from St. Ambrose Church. I am so sorry to hear of her passing, which is way too soon. I plan on attending her services once announced and meeting her brothers and family.

Jerry, Bill and John, this tribute to your sister has stopped me in so many ways. The pictures is exactly as I remember Roxanne in our younger years. As I did not know her well then I reconnected with her whenever I would drive through at Zions Bank. She always asked about me and my family and then briefly spoke about those family friends we had in common. She was always happy and friendly. I am just so sorry for your loss. Thank you for being so honest in your memories of her.

Rox was one of my oldest and dearest friends. She was always outgoing, kind and full of love. No matter the distance or the span of time, there was no change to this constant. Her health struggles never affected the lovely person she was, and will continue to be, for me. I will always remember and love her as the dearest friend and sister she was. With tears, Michelle

Gray Family,

I'm so sorry to hear of Roxanne's passing.

I knew Roxanne from Judge Memorial Class of 79 and beyond. I think one year our lockers were next to each other! She was a great friend to all in the extended group of Judge grads that still keep in touch today.

Thank you for the wonderful obituary.

My whole heart goes out to your family during this difficult time. I wish I knew Roxanne, heard her story, and the feelings and similarities we share. Perhaps attend some recovery meetings together and show her how I stay sober one day at a time. I know how hard it is, as I have been in her shoes - not wanting to ask for help until death or alcohol was no longer an option. My heart genuinely hurts for her and for your family. I am so very sorry she passed alone. Your respectful, loving, and heartfelt tribute to her is moving and honest. I was compelled to reach out to your family and tell you this despite my being a stranger. Roxanne is in my heart at this time. I send you and your family wishes of spiritual assurance and warmth as you go through this challenging process. Together. One day at a time.

I am so sad to hear about Roxanne's passing. I had the joy of meeting her at IHG and working with her. It was there we also discovered she was one of my husbands elementary school teachers. When I came home from work the day we found this info out my sweetie said yes, I remember Ms. Gray...she used to dance on the table! I loved talking to her and laughing with her at work. She was always so nice and genuine to me. I'm sorry for you loss but I appreciate your loving and honest tribute to her. Rest Easy.

My heart is heavy over this news. Roxanne was so kind to our family as our favorite teller at ZIONS BANK. She was Especially kind to our mother who was suffering from dementia. Roxanne would always walk all the way around the teller windows to give our mother a huge hug. It meant everything to her, and to us. This obituary was an incredible, transparent, loving tribute. Rest in peace, sweet girl.

I knew Roxanne from Zions Bank. She was my late mother´s ( Joyce Ball) trusted friend at the bank. She was warm and witty and with a wink she knew just how to deal with my mom! Her parents were my neighbors as well and are missed in our neighborhood. I absolutely loved the beautifully written obituary. Such a perfect capture of a beloved sister.
Sending prayers of peace.

What a beautiful tribute for a beautiful sister. Roxanne would have been thrilled to hear, not only the words, but your heartfelt love, care and concern for her.

My association with the Gray family started many years ago on Wilshire Drive and progressed to Dallin as the kids grew up. I oftentimes had the pleasure of sitting them when Dean and Marie were out-of-town. Each of you had your own personalities but Roxanne was one-in-a-million. Over the years our paths hadn't really crossed until I had an opportunity to visit with her at your mom's funeral. She shared her experiences at teaching and that she was doing well.

The insight you provided in your memories of Roxanne were candid and more importantly loving. As brothers, one can see how much you loved her and the emptiness you will feel by her absence. Jerry, Billy and John ... may you find peace and strength in the cherished memories you hold dear.
God Bless.

Dear Jerry, Bill and John,

I was heartbroken to see your beautiful tribute your sister and to my childhood friend. I had the good fortune of running into Roxanne a couple of years ago. I was in Utah packing up my dad´s house after his Alzheimer´s diagnosis. My son Sammy, my dad and I were heading to Sammy´s truck to take a lunch break and she appeared with a dog she was walking. She was so excited to see all of us. She knew my son Sammy from the years he worked at my dad´s dental office. We each got one of those bear hugs of hers. I told her I was moving my dad to CA to live with me. She was truly sad. We exchanged emotional stories about our parents aging. My dad was already having problems identifying people, but when he saw her he reached his arms out to her for a hug. My dad was her dentist until his retirement in 2017. He was so happy to see her. She told us that day how grateful she was to my dad for helping her with some dental issues and connecting her to affordable options because she knew he could have made a lot of money if he had done the dental work himself, but he cared more about helping her. She made clear to us, that made such a difference to her life and she knew he really cared about her. It meant a lot to hear that. We continued to catch up and share life. I remember thinking how great it was to see her... friends since Cosgriff Tigers days. Lots of fond memories.

I am so sorry you have to experience this loss. She was one of a kind. The tribute gave me great comfort because it illustrated that although she was physically alone when she died, she was deeply loved and adored by her family so she was not really alone. Just as she carried each of you in her heart, you will carry her love in yours. Love never dies, keep telling her story.

On behalf of the Stephens family, we send love and healing light to the Gray brothers and their families.
Love,
Sherianne Grimm

My prayers are with you as we mourn in the loss of Roxanne and celebrate her beautiful life and spirit.
Take care and remember the beautiful memories of your very sweet sister.
My favorite memory is babysitting for the Gray family and then having Roxanne babysit Matt, my son when he was young. She reminded me of that at a Judge reunion about 10 years ago and told me how she remembered Matt had an imaginary friend named mailbox. Such precious cherished friendships.
May Roxanne rest in peace

Miss Gray was my 3rd grade teacher at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School. She was the best teacher ever!!! I remember she had these jars in our classroom and they were fairy jars. She taught us to use our imaginations because those jars contained real fairies. They would come out and do tricks haha. She always had such a great personality and yes she gave the best hugs. I later came into contact with her as a teenager, she had gave me her phone number. She was a great listener and would give some great advice. We lost contact for sometime. Then one day there she was, working at the same company as I. When I seen her at IHG (Holiday Inn call center) I was so excited to see her. We talked like we had never lost contact and caught up on so much in life. It was weird to go from calling her Miss Gray to Roxanne. I wish there were more Roxannes out there. She was a very delightful lady. She had a great sense of humor, when I ran into her at IHG I asked her how her fairies were doing. She got a good laugh out of that. She will be missed by many. Rest in Paradise Sweet Miss Gray.

I hope to know when a memorial service will be

I worked with Roxanne in Murray School District. It was there we learned of our Judge connection. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of her is her laugh. She saw humor in things that many others missed and for that I loved chatting with her. Later she was my youngest daughter's teacher at the junior high. It saddens me that she struggled so long with alcohol and she passed alone. My sympathies to her family.
