Roy Bunevich Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Funeral & Cremation Services and Cemetery - North Olmsted on Dec. 19, 2025.
Roy Stevan Bunevich, age 80, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Stevan Carl and Edith Marie (née Barensfield) Bunevich, Roy lived a life defined by love, dedication, and purpose.

Roy was the beloved husband of Eileen (née Mackey) for 57 wonderful years. He was a proud father to Brian (Michelle, née Kuczmarski) and Matthew Bunevich, and a cherished grandfather to Hank Bunevich. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce (Jodi) Bunevich. Roy was preceded in death by his eldest son, Jason Bunevich.

A strong-willed and devoted family man, Roy spent over 30 years as a teacher of history, physical education and health, inspiring generations of students. His passion for his students extended beyond the classroom. He coached football and baseball for many years and occasionally tennis and wrestling. Roy's influence touched countless lives, and his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he taught and mentored.

Outside of teaching, Roy had a special love for boxer dogs and took pride in caring for them. His beloved companion, Bailey II, was always by his side. He was passionate about music and enjoyed singing and playing polka songs for family and friends on his accordion. Roy will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, his love of sports, and his ability to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8th from 3pm-7pm at Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Friday, January 9th starting at 12pm at Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio 44070 with burial following immediately.

"Those who found a way into your heart have a way of staying forever"
Roy and I shared the gym at Steele H.S. for many years as teaching colleagues...Bunce and Bunevich! I have so many wonderful memories and funny stories of those years. I am so saddened by his passing. He always seemed indestructible! A tough no nonsense guy who was funny and kind and respected because he treated students and everybody fairly. An unforgettable character, Roy, you'll stay in my heart forever!

Mr. B, The impact on the lives of those who had the honor to call you friend and mentor, is indescribable. My family and I never forgot what you did for us. How you helped to save us. We know you did the same for many others. God has welcomed you home with open arms. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Thanks be to God for the life and witness of Mr. Roy Bunevich. I fondly recall his faith-filled and engaging style as a history teacher as well as his passion as a football coach. "Rest eternal grant to him O Lord and let light perpetual shine upon him."

Roy's passing put a cap on a 67-year-old friendship. Frequent correspondence kept us abreast of significant events affecting our respective lives. He was far more than just a good friend-he became the brother that I never had. What a shock to learn that complications from pneumonia proved to be fatal. My deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to the entire Bunevich family.
