Roy Edward Byers

Roy Edward Byers, passed away on 7 September 2010. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on 8 June 1934. Roy is survived by his wife of 54 years Connie Byers, his family, son Bill, daughter in law Tinka, nephew Alex Sadas, niece Connie Esters and his grandchildren, Kyle Ann, Bob and Patrick Byers. He served 20 years in the US Army, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW3). Roy received his warrant in the signal corps. He served tours in Korea, Germany (at the Fulda Gap) and Vietnam. His awards include the Bronze Star (2 awards), the Army Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards) and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/ Palm. Following his retirement from active duty, he spent 20 years working as a project manager / engineer for Litton Industries. During this time he and Connie spent time in Iran, Jordan and California. Roy and Connie moved to Wimberley Texas in 1997 to be closer to their family after he retired from Litton. They became very involved in all their grandchildren's activities. They enjoyed following them in sports, music and theater. Roy and Connie were strong supporters of the Emily Ann Theater. Roy has been a member of VFW Post 6441, Wimberley Texas for the last 13 years serving as Hall Chairman, Post Surgeon and Bingo Chairman. He was also a member of the Long Island Post of the American Legion (with his two brothers Tom and Bob Byers). He was preceded in death by his parents Robert John and Mary Pauline Byers, his brothers Bob and Tom Byers, his sisters Mary Ann Scimeca and Eileen Morony and 2 of his children Douglas and Suzanne Byers. A viewing will be held on 12 September 2010, 4 – 6 pm @ Thomason Funeral Home Wimberley Texas. Mass will be said on 13 September, 11 am @ St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wimberley. A reception will immediately follow at the Wimberley VFW post hall. His graveside service will be held on 17 September @ Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY to be with his children and family. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made in Roy's memory to the Oldham Cummings VFW Post 6441 in Wimberley and / or the Health Alliance of Austin Musicians. He was a kind a loving man with a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.
