Roy E. McDowell, 61, of Sumner, IL, passed away on November 10, 2025, at his home.
He was born on July 30, 1964, in Olney, IL, to Jack McDowell and Cleo (Groff) Jones. Roy grew up in Olney and made Sumner his home for the past 50 years. He worked at Indian Refinery in Lawrenceville before its closure and later spent over 30 years as a skilled bricklayer. A hardworking man all his life, Roy took pride in a job well done.
Roy deeply loved his wife, Debra K. Frederick. The two shared more than 40 years together, building a life filled with love, laughter, and steady devotion. Her passing in 2021 left a space in his heart that never quite healed, and those who knew him take comfort in knowing they are now together again.
In his free time, Roy could often be found sitting on his porch, listening to baseball on the radio, and cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack McDowell and Cleo (Groff) Jones; his wife, Debra K. Frederick; and his brother, Jack McDowell.
Roy is survived by his sons, Justin McDowell, Joshua McDowell, and James McDowell; his grandchildren, Maddison Cooper, Allyssa McDowell, and Trenton Jayne; and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters, Debbie McDowell, Grace McDowell, and Carol Wells, as well as several nieces and nephews.
It was Roy’s wish to be cremated, and a private family service will be held at a later date. Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is assisting the family with arrangements.
