Champion—Roy L. Mercandino, 85, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 5, 2024
Roy was born March 27, 1939 in Niles, Ohio to the late Elmer & Helen Mercandino. Roy spent his life in Ohio; graduating from Howland High School, he went on to his career in the steel industry at Republic Steel Corp and ultimately retiring from WCI Steel. He supported his fellow workers by being involved in his Union, and eventually becoming president of the Local 6824.
Roy was an active member of St. Williams Church, the Knights of Columbus, RCIA team, and the church choir. He was a supporter of the Sisters of Notre Dame, and of community soup kitchens and food pantries.
Roy was an avid sports fan, enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, and spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, in 2023. He is survived by his siblings: Sherry (Glen) Gray, Terry (Janet) Mercandino, and Reina (Phil) Taylor. He leaves 3 children: Donald (Jessica) Mercandino, Michele Mercandino, and David (Peggy) Mercandino; and 4 step-daughters: Lawreen (Mark) Caldwell, Lisa (David) O’Brien, Mary (John) Lekan, and Kathleen (Craig) Cleal. Roy also leaves 22 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and beloved friend Garfield Leek.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 10-12:00PM at Lane Family Funeral Homes Roberts-Clark Chapel at 180 Garfield Dr. NE., Warren, OH, with services immediately following at the same location. Flowers may be sent to the chapel, or please consider a monetary donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Roy’s name.
In this time of sadness, the family prays that Roy will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and overall love of family and friends.
