Roy E. Scheckelhoff
OTTAWA – Roy E. Scheckelhoff, 95, of Ottawa, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at The Meadows of Ottawa. He was born March 28, 1928, on the family farm in New Cleveland to the late Rudolph and Catherine (Inkrott) Scheckelhoff. On October 27, 1951, he married Erma Meyer, the love of his life. Erma passed away in 2021 and he missed her each and every day.
Roy is survived by his sister, Wilma Radabaugh; and sisters-in-law: Mary Scheckelhoff and Regina Scheckelhoff, both of Ottawa.
He was preceded in death by six siblings: Jeannette (Tom) Schroeder, Alice (Clark) Herring, Earl (Regina) Scheckelhoff, James (Mary Lou) Scheckelhoff, Herb (Mary) Scheckelhoff, and Marilyn (Delbert) Westrick.
Roy loved spending time with his family, sons: Douglas (Cheri) Scheckelhoff of Laurel, Maryland and Kevin (Terrie) Scheckelhoff of Naples, Florida; grandchildren: Danica Hope Scheckelhoff, Douglas (Kristen Wright) Scheckelhoff Jr., Hale (Taylor) Scheckelhoff, Hannah (Alexander) Javelly, Tessa (fiancé Matthew) Scheckelhoff, Trevor (fiancé Callie) Scheckelhoff; and great-grandchildren: Cora Javelly and Riley Scheckelhoff.
Roy served in the 112th Medical Battalion/37th Infantry Division of the United States Army. Upon returning from the Army he was one of the early hires at the Sylvania/Philips ECG Company in Ottawa were he would work for the next 40 years. He loved the Ottawa community and was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 63, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Philips Quarter Century Club and the Ottawa Dance Club.
Roy placed great value on family and friendship. Roy and Erma's siblings all lived in Putnam County and they both enjoyed visiting, playing cards and traveling with those family members their entire lives. Roy was also blessed with countless friends in Ottawa during the 73 years he and Erma lived here: pals from the Army, the people he worked with at "the plant", friends from their cottage, and the staff and residents at the Meadows of Ottawa.
Roy had a tremendous work ethic but thought that life should be fun as well. Erma and Roy loved their cottage on the Maumee River and over the course of 50 years it was an endless source of great memories for the entire family. Roy certainly knew how to have fun, but more importantly, he knew how to be fun.
He helped both his sons attend The Ohio State University and subsequently became a big Buckeye football fan. He and Erma loved to watch the games on TV and they even managed to see a few games at The Shoe. He enjoyed the games a lot more when the Bucks had a big lead by halftime.
Roy had a wonderful, full life and his favorite thing in the world was to dance with his Erma. He will be deeply missed by his family but they draw great comfort from knowing that the team of Roy and Erma are back together again and this time it will be forever.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Scott Kramer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa. The funeral service will be streamed on Saturday through the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Facebook page.
