Roy Allen Smith, 77 years of age, left his earthly home and entered into the embrace of our Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven on Tuesday, November 8th, due to an unexpected tragedy. He was born to Clarence and Bertha Smith on March 9, 1945 as the youngest of six children, and they all doted on & loved the baby of the family. His parents and two of his precious siblings, Louise Smith and Vergie Smith Revis, preceded him in death. He was also loving brother and friend to Evelyn Calhoun (husband James), Ray Smith (wife Linda), and Irma Jean Calhoun (late husband Keith.)
Allen, as he was known, as he hated his first name, was the very finest husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He and his beloved wife, Jennifer Griffin Smith, were happily married for 58 years. They had four children: Keith Smith (wife Lorie), Kimberly Smith, Jason Smith (wife Susanna), and Amanda Smith Turbyfill (husband Timothy.) He was "Papaw" to nine grandchildren: Michael, Luke, Joshua, Benjamin, Ella, & Josiah Smith, Candice Howard, and Carolina & Davis Turbyfill. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in addition to the names listed above, and Allen loved and was proud of each member of his family.
Manufacturing was the field Allen worked in, and many who have worked at Thermo Fisher, Gerber, & Burlington Industries (amongst other companies) will remember him. He had an excellent work ethic and took pride in what he did. We also know he had some good times with coworkers because he definitely told his family some funny stories.
Many of his favorite times in life were spent on the lake. Allen and his wife Jennie enjoyed boating & camping. The family has many great memories of time spent at area lakes with Papaw & Grandmommie. We usually didn't catch a ton of fish, but we sure enjoyed that time together that we spent trying.
There was never a more loving relationship than what Allen & Jennie shared. It was a beautiful thing to witness. The way they took care of each other and spoke to each other it made jaded and brokenhearted people believe in love again.
Allen was a loving, caring, and compassionate man. We believe the last words he spoke to most of his family members were, "I love you." If he loved you, you knew it. What a gift to leave behind as a legacy of one's life.
A Celebration of Life service is planned for December 17th at 2:00 pm at the Biltmore Church of Christ -pending the fragile health of immediate family members. Church is located at 823 Fairview St, Asheville NC 28803.
