I had the privilege of meeting this wonderful human being in May 2009. He welcomed me into his heart and home and within minutes, I was already a granddaughter. I even lived with him for a month or 2 in the Summer of 2011 and he would share his childhood stories and stories of my Erik's childhood, as we walked the few steps to the church.
The same interest he took in everyone he met on day 1, was the same interest he had time after time. Not a single person left his home, not feeling special. Erik & I enjoyed getting to bring him down to our home in central Texas a few years back. Its where we got him his Texas cowboy hat. He thanked us by introducing the local game warden to us (haha). We knew our days with him were becoming limited and so it was special to us when we were able to bring him and Ms. Shirley to our new home for a day visit last year.

While he often spoke about he hoped he served the Lord well in his lifetime, he often shared how his goal and passion was to lead others to be saved. I have no doubt the Lord said to him in the early hours of December 9th, " well done" and welcomed him home. We all know what a glorious day in Heaven it has been since - I can see his big ol' smile.

In addition to his unwavering faith, he loved his family. The lines of who was actually blood family and who are family by hugs and pure love are blurred and that's a huge testament as to who he was. He didnt have much, but he had a lot of love, so indeed he was a rich man. While he succeeded in helping and encouraging others to love the Lord and to be saved, I can say that he was not a perfect man. He did get me to love cornbread, butter beans, and black eye peas, but he never succeeded in getting me to eat deer steak. Sorry, not sorry Papaw.

Thank you Papaw for the life lessons you demonstrated and shared through your life. You were only in my life for 14 years, but you were the grandparent that chose me. We want to remember the you we had when you knew us. We would always end our calls with him with "we love you Papaw" and "we'll see you, when we see you".

We love you Papaw and we'll see you when we see you.

I can remember dad telling me about him getting saved when he was 9 years old. His parents built the little Assembly of God Church there in Mangham when he was a little boy of course that church is no longer there but he loved to tell me stories about his parents. I love my daddy, he was a man that loved God with all his heart and wanted to tell everyone about his Jesus. He made it to his home in heaven and I know he is a happy man. Love you dad.
