Ruben Benjamin Bernal, born February 9, 2005, in Pueblo, Colorado, was unexpectedly taken from us April 23, 2025.
Ruben was raised in Walsenburg, Colorado and graduated from Walsenburg Jr/Sr High School in 2024. He loved being around his family and friends. He loved camping and fishing - he would always ask and want to go with his older cousins when they came to town. He loved to cook steak, and his favorite food was hot wings. He was a "sister" brother (grew up with sisters) and always protected the women around him. He was the most respectful kid to have around and even put his friends in check at times when it was needed and his best subject in school was math.
He is survived by his grandmother, Janice Bernal; father, Benjamin Bernal Jr; mother, Tara Rivera; sisters: Cheyenne Bernal, Harlee Bernal, and Angel Bernal; his niece he loved so much, Analiyah Valdez; nephew, Angelo Cisneros; and many other brothers and friends.
He is preceded in death by his great-grandparents: Margarito Bernal and Molly Finn, Ruben and Viola Martinez; grandfather, Benjamin Bernal Sr.; uncles: Margarito Bernal, Anthony Bernal, Patrick Bernal, and Russle Martinez; aunt, Brenda Bernal; brothers, Rj Sandoval and Duane James Jamarillo.
The family is planning to have a viewing on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 1pm at Boies-Ortega Funeral Home in Walsenburg, Colorado. Other details for a Celebration of Life will be posted at a later time.

Sundance was the place I first met Ruben... It was always nice to see Ruben and so many of the community in those few days. My family and I, we love y'all and are sad that those rare days with him at the dance are different now. Not just in the past-tense, but into the future. I pray more young ones can come and gain the strengths that we need in these times of pain.
Abrazos,

My first time meeting Ruben was at my place of employment. He would have been 4th or 5th grade. He was a quiet boy. His junior and senior years of high school he started to come out of his quiet shell and would converse with me and I could get him to smile that handsome smile. I was able to him graduate and that was a wonderful moment and memory that will stay with me forever. I only knew Ruben for a very short 10yrs, but in those short years I had big respect and big love for him.
