Ruby Lee Carrier (Jones), born February 16, 1945, in Mobile, AL, to the late Alonzo Jones Sr. &
Norma Lee Jones. She was the eldest of 9 children, which included 6 brothers: Joseph, Alonzo Jr.,
Sylvester, Nathan, Rudolph & Alfred; & 2 sisters: Marjorie & Edwina.
Ruby was extremely close to her mother and she was very helpful & active in assisting her mother
with her siblings. To know Ruby was to love her. Her kindness, love, compassion & sense of humor was
infectious. She loved to laugh & would get "tickled" at the silliest things.
On December 26, 1966, Ruby welcomed her daughter, Valencia Barnes (Cleveland) into the world. She
poured her heart & soul into raising her daughter. The two of them were very close & would often
laugh & act silly. People often told them they looked and acted like sisters.
In 1972, Ruby relocated to Los Angeles, CA. She quickly found a job in the medical field as a Central
Service Technician. Her main duties were sterilizing instruments for surgery & delivering medical
supplies or equipment to the hospital floors, which is also why she was a neat & clean freak. She
loved her job and she was loved by all her co-workers who quickly became friends. She retired from
her position after 44 years at the age of 62.
In 1983, Ruby met the love of her life, the late James Melvin Carrier, better known to her as
"Sweetcake", the nickname that the two of them called each other. They had the funniest loving
relationship. Their playful bickering back & forth was always comical. Her husband would often tease
her about her cleaning & wiping down EVERYTHING. They both loved family and would visit his & her
hometown of Welsh, LA & Mobile, AL every year. Finally in 2014, they relocated from CA to Welsh,
LA.
Ruby is survived by her only child, Valencia Barnes (Cleveland); Son-in-law, Larry Barnes; Grandson,
Joshua Campbell; Stepdaughters, Karen & Veronica Carrier; Stepson, Thermon Carrier;
Stepgrandchildren, Cameron Garris, Asha & Aspen Carrier, Briana Harvey, Justin Carrier, Robert
Alexander, Sharish Davis, Charish Davis-Murray, Pamela Tripeaux, Keisha Davis & Robert Davis;
Brothers, Alonzo Jr., Nathan & Rudolph Jones; Sister, Marjorie Timmons & a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins & friends.
Ruby was proceeded in death by her mother & father, Alonzo Sr. & Norma Jones; Husband, James
Carrier; Brothers, Sylvester & Alfred Jones; Sister, Edwina McCrary; Stepson, Robert Carrier;
Sister-in-law, Janie Norris & Brother-in-law, William Lynn Joseph.
