Ruby Spears Chambers, a beloved member and pillar of the
Osyka, Mississippi community, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2023, in her residence surrounded by her loving family at the age of 96.
Born on September 17, 1927, and raised in Osyka until she moved to Baton Rouge in 1944. There she took on the head role of the high bill department at Gulf States Utilities. On September 21, 1947, she married Tuffy and became a military wife, accompanying him to various locations in Germany and across the United States for 21 years. The couple actively participated in the Baton Rouge Camper's Club, where they held the position of president from 1967 to 1968. She had a diverse set of hobbies including duplicate and traditional bridge, being a porcelain artist, and an antique collector, even opening an antique shop later called Ruby's Attic Treasures. Ruby and Tuffy shared a passion for adventure and traveled extensively around the world.
Over 32 years, they journeyed across the country in their motorhome to attend Porcelain Art Shows, where Ruby was a longstanding booth holder under the name Backachers Books. During their travels she shopped for antiques and visited historical sites, all while visiting family & friends. Ruby was deeply involved in the founding of the Osyka Veteran's Park in 2005, as well as bringing the annual Wreaths Across America celebration to the park since 2014. She played a key role in securing the land for the park, obtaining the old town hall and jail for the museum and restoring the old Catholic church, several railroad storefronts, and numerous other properties in Osyka. Her most memorable one being their 1800's Victorian home, known as the White Elephant. Throughout her many endeavors, her family remained her greatest source of pride and joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Andrew Spears and Eunice Cutrer Spears; three sisters, Addie Lee Spears Feigler, Louise Spears, and Helen Spears Smith; and eight brothers, Talmadge Spears, Fred Andrew Spears, Frederick Spears, Jimmie Spears, Roderick Spears, Homer Spears, Charles Spears, and Ben Spears.
She is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, Tuffy J. Chambers, Sr.; son, Jay Chambers; daughters, Gwen Perry and her husband Roy, Helen Baldwin and her husband Paul; her two grandsons, Casey Perry and Clint Perry; two granddaughters, K'Lynne Bratton and Sarah Baldwin; five great-grandsons, Keagan Bratton, Elias Bratton, Kason Bratton, Raiden Bragg, and Kiran Bragg; three great-granddaughters, Ellie Perry, Kaia Perry, and Ava Perry; her sister, Margie Spears Daniels; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Ruby's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all those she interacted with, as well as those she influenced without ever meeting. You can help perpetuate her kindness, loyalty, and compassion by making a donation to or volunteering at the Osyka Veteran's Park and Museum.
