Ruby Dettore Obituary
Formerly a long-time resident of Fleet St. in Rankin and in recent years of Forest Hills, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.
Ruby was born on January 25, 1928 in
Escanaba, Michigan to Bartol and Barbara Valich.
She was the beloved wife of the late Ernie Dettore, Sr. for 31 years until his death.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Carl and John Valich and her sister, Anne Bolena.
Ruby is survived by her loving children, Ernie (Cathy) Dettore of Edgewood, Larry (Renee) Dettore of Forest Hills, Debbie (Michael) Hannon of FL, and David (Jodie) Dettore of Monroeville.
She was the treasured grandmother of Ernie (Tracy) Dettore III, Heather Hannon, Melissa (Ty) Rozier, Nicole Dettore, Natalie (Sam) Buchholz, Matt (Ashley) Dettore and Jared Dettore.
Ruby is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Marissa Dettore-Rainey, Marquest and Major Rainey; Ben and Bryce Dettore; Giavanna Holby; Carley, Owen, Jacob and Julie Buchholz; Ashley and Joseph Hardin; Henry Dettore and Declan Hannon.
Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother.
As a child, during the Great Depression, Ruby loved ice skating, skiing and swimming. She helped her parents raise lambs, pigs and chickens as well as plant vegetable gardens. As a teen, Ruby worked to make provisions for soldiers during World War II and also planted Victory gardens. After her marriage and her move to Rankin, Ruby was a seamstress for Standard Sportswear in Braddock. She later became an Operations Assistant with Merrill Lynch in their downtown Pittsburgh office.
As an adult, Ruby loved her church, and enjoyed baking, bowling, bocce, walking, exercising, dancing, word games, playing solitaire and Scrabble, rooting for the Steelers and Pirates, attending her grandkids' sporting events and being an encouraging neighbor to the Fleet St. children.
During retirement, Ruby volunteered at Braddock Hospital for 15 years, and was an officer on the board of directors of the Salvation Army in Braddock. She was awarded Golden Ager of the Month in October 2003. Ruby was a member of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, Forest Hills lodge, and also the Croatian Fraternal Union.
Her favorite pastime was spending any time with her family, especially at family outings and reunions.
Friends are welcome on Thursday from 6-8 pm and Friday from 2-8pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 700 Linden Avenue at Cable Avenue, East Pittsburgh (412-824-8800).
Mass of Christian Burial in St. Maurice Church of St. Joseph the Worker Parish on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Ruby will be laid to rest in Braddock Catholic Cemetery.
Ruby's family extends deep gratitude to the staff of Seneca Village and Seneca Place for their outstanding care and attention given to Ruby.
