Ruby Louise Downs, age 82, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, June 25, 2023. Ruby was born to Percy and Mattie Lee Smith on November 14, 1941 in Belzoni, Mississippi. After losing her father at a young age, Ruby was raised by her mother and her earthly father, Charlie Z. Gilmer. She was happily married to the late Charlie “Slick” Downs for 37 years. Ruby was a faithful member of Country Woods Baptist Church of Byram, MS. She was involved in the Children’s Ministry where she rocked and loved on babies. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Charlie Edmund “Chuck” Downs Jr; daughter, Sherron Denise Downs; brothers, Percy, George, Clarence, and Jim Smith; sisters, Annie Lee Elmore, and Daisy Whatley. She is survived by her children Lisa Dickson (John), Stephanie Jones (Van), Charity Towne (Brent); grandchildren, Alex Rushing (Garrett), Anna Kate Murphy (Tristan), Kaela Jones, Jack Dickson, Hayes Dickson, Brookley, Camden, and Sawyer Towne; great-grandson Asher Rushing; brother, Jerry Gilmer (Marion); brother and sister-in-love, Paul and Dianne Downs; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Jack Dickson, Hayes Dickson, Camden Towne, Garrett Rushing, Tristan Murphy, and Bubba Thompson.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2023 5-7 pm as well as Wednesday, June 28, 2023 from 12 pm until the hour of service at 1pm. All will be held at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Interment will be at Floral Hills Cemetery in Pearl.
