Ruby Bertha Gist, the daughter of the late Deacon Fant and Adelle Glenn Gist was born Thursday, June 8, 1939, in Jonesville, South Carolina. She made her transition to eternal rest on Sunday November 9, 2025, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Ruby was a 1958 graduate of Sims High School in Union, South Carolina.
Ruby accepted the Lord at an early age at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jonesville, South Carolina. She has lived in other cities but always nurtured her spiritual growth through memberships at Sacrificial Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio and Carmody Hills Baptist Church in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, where she served on the Trustee, Missionary, and Usher Ministry. She was a dedicated employee of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters in Washington, DC, where she retired after 27 years of service.
After her retirement she moved to Pacolet, South Carolina, where she reunited with Jerusalem Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and served as President of the Woman Missionary Ministry. In 2024 Ruby was honored as being the oldest member of the church. Ruby was also the oldest member in the Pacolet River Association Woman Missionary.
Ruby loved many things, especially her flowers. She spent many hours in her yard planting and taking care of her flowers. She also loved shopping, especially buying hats. One of her nieces has commented that she was in heaven picking the perfect hat to match her wings.
Ruby was preceded in death by six brothers; Fant Jr., Nelson, James, Charles, Douglas, and Willie Lee; two sisters, Rudean Gist Gregg and Ruth Gist Shands, one nephew Stacey Gist.
She is survived by two loving sisters, Roberta (Les) Jones of Oxon Hill, Maryland and Frances DeLois Gist of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and several nephew, nieces, cousins, and dear friends who will miss her dearly.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Community Mortuary, Inc. 102 Marion Avenue, Spartanburg on Monday, November 17, 2025, from 4:00 PM- 6:00 PM.
